How Joining a Club Can be Your Best Support Group

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at VCU chapter.

On the lookout for friends with similar interests or maybe you just want to meet different people? Clubs and organizations in college are probably the best ways to make friends easily or expose you to a network of people with similar interests and different personalities. As daunting as it sounds to get out there, everyone who is joining the club or organization you are looking at is also in the same boat of wanting to make friends. Whether it be a club that looks good on a résumé or one that presents itself as an open discussion platform, both have perks as to why you should be interested. The benefits to joining are pretty clear and many campuses have hundreds of clubs to choose from, that there is one for everyone!

College is an opportunity to branch out and find out what you are interested in as well as what type of person you are! It can be a fun, but also overwhelming time in your life where you are trying to balance classes, work, mental and physical well-being, a social life and anything else life decides to throw at you. An approach to having a healthy social life as well as taking care of your well-being is having a strong support group. This can be formed by surrounding yourself with friends that you meet by joining an organization.

Everyone is looking to make new friends and find their ride or die group where they feel welcome and safe to be themselves around. You can find so many different types of people that have different backgrounds, personalities, and goals that may be similar to yours or challenge you to have a better mindset. There are many organizations that are open platforms that encourage discussion on specific topics. Sometimes these organizations also allow you to use creative ways to express your opinions or beliefs, which can be helpful and serve as an outlet. Being able to tie in your interests in order to meet new people through discussions or being involved in different activities, can be such an important life lesson that can make an impact on you!

The friends that you will encounter and ultimately choose to keep in your life throughout college can be your best support group that you might not have found otherwise. Having friends that relate to your goals but who also have different views can allow you to grow as a person as well as open yourself up to new and exciting experiences! A group of friends that are there for you and encourage you to reach new goals throughout your college experience is so vital, that I recommend at least trying to see if an organization if right for you!

There are so many clubs out there that provide different resources, one of them being friendship, which can give you an outlet to express and find yourself outside the classroom and in a different environment!
