My boyfriend and I have been in a long distance relationship for about four years now. This is our fourth Valentines Day apart, so needless to say we are used to having our celebrations be over FaceTime. The exchange of gifts between the two of us usually consists of flowers or candy, the normal cliché Valentine’s Day gifts. But this year, we decided to switch things up.
Bouquets of flowers are incredibly expensive this time of year, especially to have them delivered. Seeing that flowers die after about a week or two, we decided that flowers are a pretty pointless gift (A very sweet gesture though). So my boyfriend decided to get me something different this year.
We had agreed to do a sushi dinner date via FaceTime and watch our favorite Rom Com “How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days”. We were both going to order takeout from our favorite sushi places to pick up, little did I know my boyfriend had already ordered me my sushi and had it delivered to my house. Even though the gift was simple, it was beyond perfect. We don’t need to spend a lot to show the person we love, that we care about them and are thinking of them.
Here are a few ideas for those long distance couples who need a little help coming up with a cheap gift for their loved one.
Order Them Dinner

Write Them ‘Open When’ Letters
I wrote these letters when my boyfriends and I first started our long distance relationship. They take a while to write, but mean a lot to the person reading them.
Send Them a Framed Picture of the Two of You
Having a picture of your significant other next to your bed side table can really help when you’re missing them.
Make Them a Playlist of Your Songs
Every couple has a song. Songs allow couples to remember memories that are affiliated with our loved ones when we are happy or sad. Personally, me and my boyfriend’s song is “Do You Remember” by Jack Johnson.
Countdown Jar
Countdown Jars are new to me and I have never tried them, but they sound like the perfect DIY gift for any long distance couple. You write little notes telling the other person how much you love them or why you love them for as many days you have left till you get to see each other again. A gift like this gets to be opened every single day and will always have something special inside.
