5 Affirmations To Start Your New Year with Positivity

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at PSU chapter.

2019 is just around the corner which means you can say “girl, bye” to the old energy of 2018. 2019 is a new start, and maybe you want to have a more positive year. Affirmations are a perfect New Year’s resolution if you want to improve your attitude, increase positivity and help your mental state in the new year. These sayings help remind you of things that are important to you and keep you in the present moment. Here are a few affirmations you can use in the new year to help you start off strong.

I am enough

Oftentimes, we focus a lot on how we can be better. Thinking this way can be really toxic to your self-esteem. Reminding yourself that you are enough just as you are is important. Think about it this way, all these people had to meet over thousands of years just so you could exist!

This too shall pass

This is a phrase my grammy always says. If times are tough, it’s good to remember that everything is temporary and good times will come back.

Breathe in goodness, exhale negativity

My therapist shared this one with me and it’s super helpful. This one can also be used as a breathing exercise. I like to imagine that I’m breathing in pink, or you can use your favorite color, and I’m breathing out black. It’s a great exercise if you’re a visual person.

No one is perfect, I am not perfect, and that’s ok

Realizing that nobody’s perfect *cue Hannah Montana* was really eye opening for me. Being perfect takes a lot of work and it’s very draining. Imperfection is part of being human so embrace it. For all you perfectionists out there, including myself, this affirmation is for you.

I am loved, I am appreciated, I am worthy, I am strong

“I am” sayings are very common. This is really good for boosting your self-esteem. Focusing on yourself and remembering all the good things about you is important for mental health. And you can tailor the words to things that are important to you such as intellect or kindness.

Here’s saying goodbye to one crazy year and hello to 2019. Make this your year, collegiettes!
