A new year is a perfect time and a perfect excuse for a fresh start…to begin that habit, that new routine, and finally make that change you’ve been thinking about for a while now. I know the whole idea of “new year, new me” or “resolutions” can get a bad rep. It’s true that you don’t need a “new year” to implant changes into your life. However, I believe the concept of it is great, and it’s nice to know that you can feel like you have a fresh start in a new year and can reflect on the year prior. Look back on all you’ve accomplished, all you’ve been through, and all you still want to conquer. I think fresh starts, a clean slate and desired change are all things to be embraced.
Here are some ways to quote-on-quote “reinvent” yourself for the New Year, to change it up if your anything like me and can get bored and feel stuck…for all my fellow change-cravers out there…
Set resolutions/goals
So, this is the most obvious one…but set resolutions or goals for yourself in the year ahead. In order to do this, you have to reflect back on the year you’ve just had and how much you’ve grown. Take a second to be proud of yourself. Think of where you may have lacked, and where you’re in need of some change in your life. I find this really important and also fun. I recently read back my resolutions I made for this year and it’s really cool to see how many of them I actually accomplished. And for all the ones I haven’t fulfilled will be tacked on to this year’s list. I’ve already started brainstorming for this year, but I’ll be writing them all down in my journal. There’s nothing wrong or weird about writing out your personal goals to keep just for yourself.
New hair color/cut
This is something I just started last year but I’ve come to love changing up my hair. I find it so fun and it just makes me feel like a new person at a time when I really crave change and something new. Hair is really a huge part of our identity when you think about it. And changing it up whether that be color-wise, or a new cut/style, are ways to get rid of the old and bring in the new in a creative way that’s completely up to you.
Change up your style
I do this every year, as I think most people do as we grow up, change and evolve. But I finally feel like I’m coming into my own when it comes to my style and what I like. Of course, this can change and will continue to change throughout my life, but just experimenting with different things to find what you gravitate towards is fun and helps you learn a lot about yourself.
Find a new signature scent
Scents for me are very nostalgic and remind me of specific times in my life. So, it’s really important for me to change up the scent I wear when I’m craving change. To be reminded of a time period, whether it be a good time or not, can get in the way of moving forward. If you’re anything like me I suggest finding a new signature scent for the new year to become associated with all of the new memories you’re about to make!
Create a new routine/habit
To fully feel the effects of change it has to come in all aspects of your life. In addition to your personal goals and the more external changes, it’s important to make some life changes as well. Every year I try to come up with at least one new habit or a new step in my routine to implement that I feel with make a huge difference in my life. It doesn’t have to be a million huge things, just one impactful habit can make the world of a difference. Some ideas can be: journaling a certain number of times a week, taking vitamins in the morning, giving yourself a social media free day once a week or once a month, etc.
I hope this gives some ideas for all my fellow change-cravers out there who are ready for a fresh start. Happy New Year!
