Your Perfect Holiday Gift Guide: What Gift to get Each Type of Friend or Family Member for the Holidays

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at LMU chapter.

The Holiday season is finally here! It’s time to take out those Grinch pajamas, start a fire, make some hot chocolate, put on your favorite holiday movie — and stress about what to get your friends and family for gifts this year. Everyone always has this dilemma, whether it’s getting a gift for a friend, your Mom or your significant other, it is a struggle trying to find the perfect thing to get at an inexpensive price. Here are some tips to help you out while shopping for the perfect gift for each type of friend and family member:

The Forever Best Friend

This is always the hardest gift to buy since you want to get something they wil love and use forever. My go-to with this is a meaningful, special present they will be able to look at and use forever. There are so many different ways you can go about this, for instance, this year I even got my friend a customizable mug with a drawing of the two of us on it, our names and the words ‘best friends’, since she loves mugs. Some other examples include:

  • A customizable photo book with pictures varying from 5th grade to recent years

  • Customizable coloring book with pictures of the two of you and their favorite things (their favorite album cover, favorite movie, etc.)

The Hipster Friend

This is always an easy friend to gift since their favorite store is most likely Urban Outfitters or a random thrift shop down the street from your house. Some easy gifts may include:

  • A tapestry that matches their room

  • A record of their favorite album

  • A cozy holiday sweater

  • Polaroid camera

The Fashionista Friend

Whether this friend has a more ‘Free Spirit’ sense of style or edgy, you can’t go wrong with simply buying clothing. This friend can make anything stylish, so it’s good to buy something bold:

  • Accessories like a statement necklace, rings or hat

  • Band t-shirt

  • Funky pants

  • Vintage Sweatshirt

The Tech Friend

Although it may seem like you have to spend hella money on this friend, you don’t need to. The sale section in underrated stores like TJ Maxx and Marshalls sells many tech gadgets at a discounted price:

  • Bluetooth speaker

  • Charging ‘hub’ station

  • Phone case

  • Stickers for their laptop/ laptop case

The Foodie Friend

Besides just buying a ton of food for this friend, it is easy to get a little deeper. Here are some examples:

  • Cookbook of their favorite food

  • Mini waffle maker/ popcorn maker/ cotton candy maker

  • Shirt or mug from their favorite restaurant/ coffee shop

The ‘Mom’ Gift

Personally, gifting for my Mom is the hardest; I always want to get her the perfect gift since she is one of the most important people in my life. Some of my go-to’s are:

  • The sentimental gift: Mother/ Daughter jewelry (matching bracelets/ necklaces)

  • The serene gift: Diffuser/ fragrances

  • The simple yet effective gift: Moisturizer set

The ‘Dad’ Gift

Buying Dad’s gifts can be difficult…yet simple. Whether your dad is a sports fanatic, music buff or a jokester, it can be pretty easy if you just think about their personality:

  • The classy dad: Wine opener

  • The jokester dad: Cards against humanity

  • The sports dad: Sports Jersey from their favorite team
