I recently turned 21, two weeks ago, to be exact. I had been counting down the days until I turned 21 ever since I could remember, really, although I’ve always been one to turn my birthday into an excuse to celebrate all month. I couldn’t wait to buy my own wine at the grocery store, on nights when I needed a pick me up, and to order fancy sweet drinks that I didn’t how to pronounce when I went out to restaurants with friends and family. For a while, I thought turning 16, then 18 would be the highlight of my life. However, here are three milestone birthdays, but really why turning 21 is the best and most significant birthday.

Turning 16.
I waited for this birthday for what felt like F-O-R-E-V-E-R. When I was 16, I could finally get my driver’s license, and I could not have been more excited. The luxuries of driving to school, and picking up my friends to go to the mall had me thrilled. But really at 16, you can’t do much. You’re still not a legal adult, and in some states, you still can’t drive at 16.

  2. Turning 18.
Turning 17 was a somewhat dismissable birthday, except that you can finally attend a rated R movie without your parents. 18 is when you can *FINALLY* be a legal adult, like go and get your ears pierced without your parents’ signature or be bold and get a tattoo. And, most importantly, you get to exercise your civic duty and VOTE!

 3. Turning 21.
I firmly believe that turning 21 is one of those birthdays that nearly everyone is excited for. You can finally buy alcohol yourself, and most importantly, drink in public. If you’re really hyped up like I was, you can even go to the ABC store and take a picture in front of the date denoting your birthday, meaning you can finally buy alcohol!!!! But, what’s significant about your 21st birthday is not just that you can now consume alcohol completely freely. You’re now well into your 20’s, and into the job market. Realizing I’m well into my 20’s does indeed feel weird. Woah.
