How the Internet Can Be Relaxing

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at MMM chapter.

Like all planned life events, my original idea for this article has gone array. My original mission was to go a day (or maybe even a week if I felt motivated!) without using social media or unnecessary parts of the internet. I wanted to tell you all about how productive my life became without the constant attention of my mechanical fifth limb. Unfortunately, just as my deadline was approaching, I had come to the fact that I can not even get off my phone long enough to write about my experience. Instead, I have to decide to find the positive take on my addiction.

I have learned that I am addicted to my phone, but not for the reason you probably think. I use my phone for escape and relaxation. With these last few weeks of the end of the school semester approaching, my mind and body would rather melt into a world of calligraphy videos on Instagram than practice another productive activity. So maybe in the near future, you will find another Her Campus article of mine that includes my experience without social media, but at the moment, I want to explain some really great ways I use my phone for relaxation when real life is too much to deal with.

Firstly, I have the Amazon Kindle app. It allows you to read any novel or short story in the palm of your hand. I have started to read from my Amazon Kindle app on my morning subway commute. Not only does reading in the early hours allow my brain to wake up and enjoy a different world, but it also makes a long crowded ride seem to last just a few minutes.

Secondly, I find the artsy side of Instagram to be a beautiful place. Like I said before, calligraphy videos are my new obsession. They are as simple as the name. It’s just videos of people drawing in the beautiful swirly font. If you want to branch out, there are subsections of spray paint, ceramics, drawing, and mural-making videos on Instagram. These stress-free videos are a delight throughout my busy day, and they are much better for your mental health than seeing perfect celebrities on beaches or distant friends having the time of their lives without you.

Lastly, I would like to talk about music. Yes, I know it is not a foreign concept, but sometimes we forget how influential a song can be on our daily mindsets. Whether you use Spotify, Apple Music, or something else entirely, listening to that perfect song can change your attitude for a stressful day of classes. Recently, I have been listening to John Legend’s new Christmas album to get into the holiday spirit.

So next time you think your addiction to social media and your phone is ruining your life, try changing the way you use it. If used properly, these aspects of social media and the internet through the use of modern-day smartphones can spring you into a world of relaxation during your busy everyday life.
