Self Love Through Self Stimulation

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wells chapter.

I think it is important to start this article off by saying that masturbating is a perfectly normal thing that (almost) everyone does, and we do not speak about it enough. Some people refrain from talking openly about sex for specific reasons, but I believe there is no harm in discussing it, in fact, I think it is very beneficial. There are so many health benefits that come from masturbating like helping you sleep, relieving tension, and stress, as well as being more in tune with your body and figuring what you do and do not like.  Masturbation can benefit your health by helping you sleep, relieving stress and simply being more comfortable with your body. I believe the same way people seek relaxation and comfort from a massage can be achieved through self stimulation.

You may have heard this many times before that when we orgasm the body releases the endorphins dopamine and oxytocin, which are the two chemicals in our body that are related to feeling happy. This isn’t to imply that you will feel like a completely different and more joyful person afterward, but it can help. Like, were you ever in a bad mood after really great sex? Yeah, I didn’t think so.

Another reason why I think masturbation is incredibly important is because of the relationship you can build with your own body. Our bodies should be our best friend, and you should know what it likes and what it doesn’t like. The major part of being best friends with your body is exploring it. You know the saying “If you don’t love yourself how do you expect someone else to.” I believe that it is the same concept when it comes to your body and sex. We should be informed and be in tune with our anatomy and how to pleasure ourselves first, before we expect someone else to do it. This will encourage you to be more vocal with your partner in the bedroom, which build trusts and confidence in these settings. Masturbating also isn’t something that has to be done alone. It is something that you and your partner can do together, and it will certainly keep things interesting.

Lastly, masturbating is incredibly convenient. Whether you are sexually active or happen to be going through a dry spell, you can still reach a climax without the company of others. Masturbation allows your body to remain sexual without necessarily having sex. Also, it is the safest way to have an orgasm. There are zero risks of STDs, STIs, pregnancy, awkward situations, and bullshit.
