It’s the middle of November – the days are getting dark early and since it’s Scotland, the days are also often rainy. Here are some songs to add to your rainy day playlist for when you can curl up in your duvet and listen to the sound of rain outside, feeling thankful that you’re not the one getting soaked.Â
1. “Dawn” by Dario Marianelli
One thing that cannot be disputed about Joe Wright’s 2005 adaption of Pride and Prejudice is its amazing, enthralling score. The best song of the list by far is “Dawn”. The soft, playful, piano music radiates warmth and comfort, and it is the perfect instrumental companion to a rainy day.Â
2. “Zawinul/Lava” by Brian Eno
“Poetically stirring” is the phrase I would use to describe “Zawinul/Lava.” It’s one of those songs you have to listen to all the way through without having anything else on in the background; it leaves you breathless by the end. It truly is the perfect song for quiet contemplation on an endless, rainy day.Â
3. “River Flows in You” by Yiruma
One of my favourite pianists is Yiruma. Although many of his songs deserve to end up on this list, the one I eventually decided on was “River Flows in You,” which is a song that not only is the best accompaniment to a melancholy, rainy afternoon but also is a song you end up replaying over and over again because of its beautiful and enthralling melody. Â
4. “Summer V” by the Tumbled Sea
I discovered the Tumbled Sea on Tumblr a few years ago and fell in love right away. They’re not very well known (they don’t even have a Wikipedia page), but they’re one of my favourite groups. Honestly, I would recommend all of their albums, and “Summer V” is definitely a rainy-day song and an amazing one at that.Â
5. “Waltz of My Heart”, Ivor Novello
This last track is from another movie soundtrack, but this time from the 2001 film Gosford Park. The song is both sweeping and gentle, and it is perfect for any occasion, especially a rainy day.
Now rainy days don’t seem so bad after all, do they?
