So, what is Afrobeat? Afrobeat is a music genre that combines various styles of West African music. It includes local African music that is mixed with jazz, dancehall and hip-hop styles. Currently, Nigerian and Ghanaian artists are ruling the Afrobeat genre. As a fellow Nigerian, I’m proud to share with you 10 songs that you should check out to get you into Afrobeats.
Yemi Alade recently released this song in September, and I fell in love with the beat. If you love this song, you should check other her other song called “Johnny,” which initially brought her to fame.
Davido is one of the hottest Nigerian artists. This is a very popular song that many West Africans listen to. This song is an ode to his true life lover.
This is one of the popular songs from his album Life is Eazi Vol. 1- Accra to Lagos. This is a nice song to listen to when you’re studying or just want to chill.
4. Sake of Love by Flavour ft Sakodie
Flavour is one of my favorite Nigerian artists to listen to, and currently, this song is my favorite among his other songs.
This is my all-time favorite song because it makes you want to dance whenever you listen to it. Plus, the music video shows a glimpse of one of the Nigerian tribes, Igbo.
Wizkid is a powerhouse in Nigeria and among Nigerians all over the world. He started to gain international recognition with his song “One Dance” that featured Drake. “Fever” is his latest release for Nigeria’s independence day.
Although there was some controversy surrounding this song after its release, I still believe this is a song one must listen to.
8. Do Like That by Korede Bello
This is the song that made me start loving Korede Bello. During my high school days, this was my favorite song to jam to.
Tiwa Savage is the queen of Afrobeat. Her songs get you up and dance, and she never disappoints with her beats. Currently, she’s signed to Jay-Z’s label Roc Nation. Watch her new release “Tiwa’s Vibe” to see why she’s called the Queen of Afrobeat.
This is the first song I have listened to by Nonso Amadi, and I love it. It has a soothing sound, and the lyrics are about different ideas one can relate to. This song has been stuck in my head ever since I started listening to it.
