Having someone to talk to all the time and cuddle with sounds great, and it is probably great. Don’t get me wrong, being single can have its benefits. However, it is definitely hard to see those benefits when you are surrounded by people in relationships. I live in a four-person suite at Siena College, and all three of my roommates have significant others. I love my roommates and I am happy for them, but it can be very easy to feel lonely. So how do I not turn into a miserable lump? The short answer is to keep busy and stay positive.
I’ve realized that laying around in my room is not going to get me anywhere. Getting out of the dorm and doing things is much more beneficial than you think. Whether its a trip to the gym or going to get a haircut, you are not giving yourself as much time to think about your relationship status. Plus, getting out and doing things that you want to do is a lot easier when you are not distracted by someone else.
When laziness takes over and getting out of the dorm does not sound appealing, I make an effort to expand my friend circle. By putting yourself out there, you are giving yourself the opportunity for new people to come into your life. It can be as simple as introducing yourself to the people down the hall.
In the end, you should not need a significant other to feel content, even if you are surrounded by people in happy, healthy relationships. I certainly do miss my roommates when they were single and the spontaneous late night activities. However, I am happy for them, and am going to continue on staying busy, positive and single (for now).
