With the confirmation of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, there is a lot to be angry about. There’s a lot to be scared about. There’s a lot to feel utterly defeated about. And while I have opted to some self-care activities like shopping the Victoria Secret 10 for $35 panty sale and buying a candle that smells like a Christmas tree (it’s never too early), there is still a large feeling of rage and helplessness I’m trying to eradicate from my body. So if you feel like you need to do something anything to help the cause of getting these old white Republican senators who don’t care about anyone out of positions of power– here are a few things you can do (and that might make you feel a tiny bit better).
1. Register to Vote – You probably keep hearing how important it is to vote- that’s because it is very important to vote. The one thing older people are good at (besides ruining the futures of younger generations) is going out and voting- like 72% better. But registering to vote can be confusing because they make it super f*cking difficult (gee I wonder why).
Fear not because you can register to vote here through Rock the Vote. It legit takes 2 minutes to register and is very easy, but deadlines for registration are approaching if you want to vote in the midterms (and you want to vote in the midterms). If you’re a college student out of state or have a disability or illness that prevents you from going to the polls to vote- get your absentee ballot here. Each state has it’s own set rules so read them carefully!
2. Donate – And I don’t just mean money! Although you can definitely donate money if you can. After Kavanaugh was confirmed, I donated to Beto O’Rourke’s campaign- the guy running against the zodiac killer Ted Cruz for the Texas Senate seat. It wasn’t any Koch Brothers sum donation, and that’s okay because anything helps! You can also donate your time- volunteer with a campaign, phone-bank, or just encourage your friends to vote. Maybe even throw a midterm election result party that requires showing your “I Voted” sticker at the door for admittance.
3. Vote on Tuesday, November 6th – On the morning of November 6th, make your tea or coffee, take a deep breath, and get ready to vote. You can find your polling place here and what you need to bring to vote here, every state varies. And know your voting rights! There have been many cases of voter suppression over the last few years, and states have passed measures to make it harder particularly for black people, students, the elderly, and people with disabilities to vote.
When you’re done casting your ballot, make sure to grab an “I Voted” sticker, slap it on, and post that shit on every one of your social media platforms.
Right now it seems like it doesn’t matter what we do – no matter how much we yell, call, or protest – because the current people in power simply don’t care. But that sucks for them because we care- we care so much that we’re going to keep yelling and calling our senators and organizing and protesting and then we’re going to wake up on November 6th and vote those assholes out of office and out of power.
