Being a music minor isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be. Yeah, at Brenau our courses remain in one building, so we don’t have to worry about being late, but it isn’t an easy subject to study.
You have to pass Theory. Seems simple, right? No. It’s the math behind the music, but it’s very difficult. I have a long background in music, and I still have trouble understanding what the professor is trying to teach half the time. Unless I have an A in Theory, I can’t be initiated into Mu Phi Epsilon, the Music Fraternity. I keep working towards that goal, and that is probably the main reason as to why I am still excelling in the course. Not to mention, minors have to go through a year of Theory compared to the five semesters the majors have to take, so I guess I got lucky. Plus, I’m getting a semester off from Theory to give myself a bit of a break.
Also, you have to complete a year of Music History. I’m sure that’ll be fun whenever I get to it. I’ve never been a huge history fan, so I know that course will be a ride.
Now if you ask me what my favorite courses are, I would have to say ensemble and applied music. You see, I’m concentrating in vocals, so I’m constantly training my voice. Plus, it gives me the motivation to take care of my throat every day and not talk as much so that I can save it for rehearsals and the upcoming choir concert in a month. I haven’t started my applied music courses yet, but I do know that the weekly one-hour vocal lesson will help me out in the long run.
Most importantly, I love the bond that the music students have. We all vent over the same things, help each other out when we don’t understand things, and all in all, we’re one happy family. What more could I ask for out of my minor course of study? Not much.
