Why I Broke Up With My Long Distance Boyfriend

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SAIC chapter.

I believe our relationship was meant to happen the way it did. We supported each other in moments that we needed support, it happened while we were both trying to follow our dreams, through the anxiety and fear of the unknown. Our relationship happened at the exact moment it needed to happen.

I believe long distance relationships can happen, and that they can be good relationships, but I also think that you need a plan in order to have a successful relationship if that is what you want. If you know you’re going to be able to be with your partner after a certain amount of time and believe that person is worth all the sucky aspects of being in a long distance relationship, get a vibrator and go for it.

As a 19-year-old in college, I have witnessed and experienced that life at this age is not the simplest. We have school, we have work, we have clubs, extracurriculars, mental and physical health, social life, etc. and relationship that is based on waiting for a phone call and wondering all the time what the other person’s up to can overflow a full glass.

I didn’t break up with him because I didn’t love him or because I wanted to get laid, I broke up with my long-distance boyfriend because I didn’t want to lose him, I broke up with him because he’s my best friend, because I wanted to experience everything this new city and experience had to offer, because I didn’t like waiting for my phone to ring and because I wanted to get to know myself before I got myself into a relationship.

I do believe college-age is young for any kind of serious relationship, we have too many other things going on, too many new experiences that might get lost being in a relationship. I could’ve stayed in the relationship, it was a very good one, that’s why I felt like I had to let it go. If it’s meant to be its meant to be, a lot of time I wish it is, but in the mean time I have a best friend that keeps supporting my dreams no matter what.

We still talk to each other and we still see each other every time I go back to Argentina and catch up in every sense. The feelings are as lit up as they were at the beginning of our relationship and not having the pressure of having to talk to each other because of the title (the traditional definition of boyfriend-girlfriend) of our relationship has made us even stronger. We talk to each other because we want to, when we want to and when we think it’s worth it.
