On Saturday, October 6, Seventh Generation and Her Campus Wisconsin teamed up to tailgate before the Wisconsin football game — but not in the way you’d think! Instead of red solo cups, we were passing out free feminine products to anyone and everyone that wanted them. Before I get into the actual event, it’s important to understand what Seventh Generation is and what they do.
Seventh Generation is a personal and homecare company with products ranging from soaps and cleaners to diapers and feminine products. As a company, they believe in “the rights of people and planet.” And what does this look like in practice? It looks like transparency of ingredients (so you know what’s in the products you’re buying!), no synthetic fragrances or dyes,   renewable plant-based ingredients and recycled materials used for packaging.
For this event, we specifically worked with their feminine product line called Free & Clear Period Care. Like all of their products, they offer ingredient transparency and products without unnecessary ingredients. Their organic cotton tampons, pads and pantiliners are free from fragrances and deodorants. As Seventh Generation preaches, you have a #RightToKnow what’s in your feminine products and feel good about their ingredients. That’s what this tailgating event was all about — letting people know this awesome brand exists and making people start thinking about what products they’re using!
The tailgating event involved a luxurious bathroom (much better than the porta potties nearby), a photo-op for Instagram pictures, a Polaroid printer for those who posted said pictures with the hashtag #FreeTheV and, of course, plenty of free samples of their pads and tampons. Her Campus members helped mostly with laying the groundwork and handing out the free samples to anyone that wanted them while the Seventh Generation team worked with the photo-op and pictures. As someone who was handing out free pads and tampons, I experienced a lot of different reactions.
Seeing as the somewhat boundary-breaking hashtag was #FreeTheV (which I had to explain to an older woman), it should be no surprise that the topic of period care is kind of taboo. Some people, even those who definitely use feminine products, seemed weary that we would even ask them if they wanted a free sample of pads and tampons. Despite some surprising reactions, there were plenty of positive reactions as well. Many people excitedly accepted a free sample or two — or a whole box — because let’s be honest, feminine products are a total necessity, but can be a nuisance to buy at times. Others who knew they wouldn’t personally use them still took the samples because they knew someone that would. After all, we’re all in this together, right?! I talked to many people who love the brand and happily told me they used Seventh Generation already.
The experience was definitely out-of-the-box and attention-grabbing at first, I must admit. I mean, I can’t say I’ve ever handed out free feminine products before a football game. However, Seventh Generation is an amazing brand, and they were able to get the word out about what they’re doing; plus, in the process, people of Madison, Wisconsin were able to get free period products! It was a great experience to team up with Seventh Generation for the tailgate and definitely opened my eyes to the discussion around period care. For more information about Seventh Generation, check out their website, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram!
