“I think you have a moral responsibility when you’ve been given far more than you need, to do wise things with it and give intelligently.”
In 2004 J.K Rowling became the first author to make Forbes’s ‘Billionaire List’, a position which she held for 7 years until 2012. At just 38 years old she was one of the youngest people on the eminent list, the only British female and one of just five self-made female billionaires. Rowling is an ardent philanthropist, serving as patron to both Multiple Sclerosis Society Scotland and Maggie’s Centres for Cancer Care for several years as well as setting up The Volant Charitable Trust to support Scottish charities in tackling social deprivation. Upon dropping off the of list Forbes cited Rowling’s charitable giving (an estimated $160 million) combined with Britain’s high tax rates for her financial demotion.
From a struggling single mum to a Forbes billionaire (now a millionaire and #48 on Forbes’ The Celebrity 100 List of highest-paid entertainers), Joanne never gave up even in the face of abundant rejection (the first Harry Potter manuscript was rejected by 12 publishers before being accepted by Bloomsbury), she serves to remind us that anything is possible if you just believe in yourself.
