Arguably one of the best romcoms of all time, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is about a girl and a guy who are in a fake relationship, both with their own agendas in the relationship. Andie Anderson, the author of the most popular How-To column, is writing the article on what girls do wrong in a relationship that don’t make the relationship last. Benjamin Berry, on the other hand, is in a bet to make Andie fall in love with him.
Today we take on an updated version of Andie’s “How-To”, to show ways that girls make some big mistakes in relationships/dating.
1. Stalking online
Okay let’s admit it. We all are guilty of this. Before you go on a date you stalk the person on their insta and twitter, clicking on more and more pages, then before you know it you are on their second aunt’s dog account. Get to know the person in person! Nothing beats face to face interaction. Of course, it’s okay to check their profile out but no need to be 7 tabs deep into their personal life that early.
2. Texting on Dates
We hear it every day… “You millennials are addicted to those phones.” You can’t deny the fact we use our phones A LOT. But when you are on a date, put it away. The world can wait a minute. Spend quality time together and enjoy their presence.
3. Expecting Guys to Pay for Things
Ladies Ladies Ladies. It is the 21st century! You’re telling me that a date can’t be paid by you?! I mean you want to talk about female empowerment, but then expect guys to pay for every little thing…I don’t think so! I’m not taking away the fact that they can pay for dates too. It’s always nice to be paid for. The thing to remember in this situation is that it’s not mandatory for the guy to pay, but if he does be sure to thank him.
4. Stop Chasing After Them
You are a dime! Seriously. You are made the way you are for a reason. And if a guy can’t see that then he isn’t worth your time! It’s the chase for the guy that is the fun of it, so chasing after him only makes them run away faster. If a guy isn’t into you don’t force things! A relationship is something that isn’t meant to be forced if you are looking for something real out of it!
5. You Don’t Know Your Own Value
This one sort of ties into the last one, but also deserves its own category. We often fear that we are “not enough”. This attitude is going to keep you single for a long time, until you realize that you are in fact enough. You deserve to be loved in the way you want to be, so don’t settle for less because you think you don’t deserve it or aren’t enough.
6. You Create Drama Instead of Memories
Men are simple creatures of the world, so being worked up constantly only confuses them. Attention seekers miss out on the memories of a relationship and don’t get to enjoy the true time spent together. If you choose to create drama you miss out on the fun things within a relationship. You spend your entire time together on a roller coaster. Sure, the ups are high, but then the lows are so low, and that just isn’t fair to you or your significant other. Memories are what will last you a lifetime.
7. Talking About Your Ex
Alright I’m going to break this down really quick. EX MEANS DONE. OVER. GONZO. BROKEN UP!!!! Stop talking about them in front of your new significant other. They don’t careeeeeee!!!! You are in a new relationship for a reason. Appreciate what you have now, and move on from your past.
8. Don’t Try to One-Up Them
You both have wonderful qualities about yourself. It doesn’t mean that because they are good at one thing that you have to be better than them every single time. This is really hard for me to say because I am so competitive and always want to win, but in the big scheme of things it’s important to remember that you both bring something to the relationship. If you were both good at every single thing you do then it would be like dating yourself, and as fun as that sounds it might get boring at some point.
9. Make Up Your Mind About Where You Want to Eat
We all know where we want to eat, so just tell him. Because if you let him pick he will pick the place you don’t want, then you’ll be upset and it won’t be as good of a dinner. No doubt that you should let him pick places too, but when he asks you what you want pick something and don’t say “I don’t care.”
10. No Matter How Far You Go True Love Will ALWAYS Find its Way
This one doesn’t need an update from the original article from Andie. It’s plain and simple. It doesn’t matter the distance between two people. If you truly care about each other that will be enough. You will find your way back together if it is meant to be.
The biggest thing about this article is that no matter what you do, relationships depend on effort, so be sure to give that above all. Happy cuffing season!
