Tips For Going Braless

Tips for Going Braless

As a girl, we’re all pretty familiar with how uncomfortable bras can be, they don’t have any medical purpose that we wear them, they don’t prevent sagging, and they don’t help prevent breast cancer, apparently not wearing them lowers your chance of breast cancer (don’t quote me on that) so does it really matter if we wear them every day?

I was in my freshman year of college when I stopped wearing a bra pretty much permanently.  I would wake up every day and put one on, even if I was wearing a sweatshirt I would put on a sports bra cause it was at least a little more comfortable than an actual bra, go to class and come back and just take it right off. Then on a sweatshirt kind of day, I just ran out the door without it, then I started doing that more and more until I was finally like… Why am I even bothering to wear them in the first place? So I just didn’t, and I haven’t except for a handful of times since then no matter what I was wearing and it’s been about two years.

The truth is when you get used to wearing bras your whole life, going outside without one can make you a little self-conscious. If you think that you’re ready to let your girls out but you’re nervous, I have some tips to ease your way into it before you just say “whatever” yet.

  1. Start off during hoodie season. If you’re wearing a big sweatshirt, chances are no one will notice, and you’ve probably already been doing this anyway.
  2. Wear a tank top instead of a bra. I have a black tank top with a little elastic built in to act like a bra, now I know this might not work for girls with bigger breast than me, but a slim fitting tank top should still help.
  3. Get nipple covers. If you’re new to this and the thing you’re nervous about is them sticking out, then you can get little reusable stickers that are a few dollars. Or you can even wear tape or band aid’s.
  4.  Know what types of shirts to wear. Clothes that are darker will hide what’s sticking out, something with ruffles, a lot of patterns, or embroidery on the front. Also, shirts with materials that aren’t very flowy that won’t really move the shirt of your boobs around too much. Wear something tight that will keep them in place.
  5. Remember, just cause you’re not wearing a bra; doesn’t mean you want people staring at your chest. You’re worried about people looking at you right? So was I, and I still am sometimes. You’re not wearing a bra because you don’t feel like it, it’s uncomfortable, or you don’t want to spend money on any. Whatever the reason, that doesn’t mean you want people want strangers staring at your chest. And if anyone tries to make you feel uncomfortable about it, or slutty (cause I’ve heard that too) they’re just a creep, and creeps are creeps whether you’re wearing a bra or not.

I’ll admit, I’m an A cup, so I know it’s easy for someone like me to go “oh, well just don’t wear a bra.” I know it’s harder out there for girls with bigger boobs, I have a friend who is a DDD and says it feels good to go out without a bra sometimes, but if she were to not wear a bra all the time it would hurt her back. I’m not saying all women have to band together and burn our bras, just don’t be afraid to leave it home next time you go out if you want.
