To my fellow Pirate Gals,
I may have walked by you on campus, took the same bus as you, or sat next to you in class. I probably didn’t talk to you. You probably didn’t talk to me. We just went about doing whatever it is we do to get through the day.
I may not ever talk to you or even see you. However, in a time where so many women are tearing each other down, there are a few things I want to tell you.
Don’t let anyone make you feel inferior. Your professors, your friends, the strangers downtown, or that cute boy that completely ghosted you. You’re worth more than that. You deserve more than that. Like Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” Don’t go through college feeling like everyone else is defining you. Define yourself because no one knows you better than you. If you love who you are, nothing else matters.
If your professors are giving you a hard time, then go to their office hours and prove them wrong and show them that you’re serious. If you feel like your “friends” aren’t actually friends, dump them. You don’t need negativity constantly following you and being on your mind. If strangers are saying rude things to you, ignore them. This is hard to do, but be confident in yourself and don’t let them win by paying them any attention. If a boy blows you off, forget about him. You deserve the world and if a boy is too blind to see your worth then you’re way too good for him.
Don’t feel pressured to make your college years the best years of your life, because they probably aren’t. You’re in college to get a degree, discover new experiences, and make a few lifelong friends. But if you want the truth, I don’t feel like these are my best years. I’m not going to force it by making bad decisions because that’s what everyone says you need to do to have a good time.
I have nothing against my years here, but I like to get my work done and relax with my boyfriend. I believe the best years of my life will be the few years that follow graduation when I get married and find something I love to do. Yours could be too. Don’t get pressured into doing something you’re uncomfortable with, especially when the people who are pressuring you only have the one reason that “it’s college.” Being strong now creates less regret later.
Make the most of your time here at ECU. Go to campus events. Do your best in class. Make one or two good friends. Make memories that will make you smile when you look back on them. But most importantly, make sure you’re proud of who you are. College is a time for growth and finding yourself. Once you find yourself, you would be surprised how quickly everything else seems to fall into place.
You’re beautiful, intelligent, and one of a kind. Live in the moment but stay true to yourself. Your life is just beginning.
