1. Start making friends now
People aren’t kidding when they say college is the best time of your life and that many of your lifelong friends will be made during your time here. I know it can be scary to put yourself out there and try to meet new people, but take comfort in the fact that everyone else is in the same boat as you! Freshman year is the best time to meet a ton of new people and get super close to them, so start now!
2. Attend the free concerts put on by OUAB
Maybe you don’t really know the person performing or all your friends say they don’t want to go… Don’t follow suit! I’ve had some of the best times at these concerts and even if you don’t know too many songs they’re still always a great time. Plus, when else are you going to get to go to concerts for free?! Take advantage of it while you can.
3. Spend as much of your free time (or busy time) with your friends
Whether it be going to The Union, JO South, fitness classes at the RPAC, going to the football games or doing homework in The Oval, do it as much of it as you can with your closest friends. One of the things I miss most about living on campus is spending every minute with my friends and being in such close proximity to them on campus.
4. Get involved
Play intramural sports, join clubs, go to fitness classes, try out for a club team, volunteer. I didn’t start getting involved until my sophomore year and one of my biggest regrets is not starting earlier because I’ve made so many great experiences through extracurricular activities. Trust me, you won’t regret it!
5. Explore Columbus
We’re fortunate enough to attend a university in the 14th most populous city in the country as well as the state capital of Ohio. We may not quite be New York City but there is always something going on here and there are so many fun things to do. Make it your mission to go to a Columbus Blue Jackets game, the zoo, COSI, the short north, German Village and North Market, just to name a few.
You have four years to have an amazing experience at one of the best schools in the country. It may seem like a long time, but I promise it will fly by, so don’t waste it!
