Generally, in Hollywood productions, there’s an overpast tradition of representing the female characters as eternal shadows of male protagonists. In literature, this also happens, but fortunately, the frequency is lower. One of the sagas that has more female representation is Harry Potter, which was written by JK Rowling, who is also woman.
Despite of the fact that the main character is a man, women have irreplaceable roles in the history. However, it is important to highlight that this concerns about the saga books, because although the films have their merits, some changes made by the script writers reinforced gender stereotypes.
Because of this, Her Campus decided to list some of these women who are complex characters with their own motivations, interests and qualities and will certainly be an inspiration to all of the readers!
1. Molly Weasley
Some people may think that Molly, as mother and housewife, should not count as an example of representativeness. But what happens is that Molly had a choice: she has chosen to take care of her family and there is nothing wrong with that.
And of course, we can’t forget that Molly is the only character to refer to someone with a bad language and has the guts to kill the bloodthirsty Bellatrix.
2. Gina Weasley
It really makes us want to cry the way Gina was reduced to a nil character in the movies. It’s true she stays in the dark during the first four books and only in the fifth we can see a different side of Gina: that’s when she decides to disengage from Harry and move on.
Gina becomes a fun, determined and independent character. In addition, it is from her that we hear that no woman should give satisfaction on her sex life when her brothers complain that she is always dating someone new.
3. Luna Lovegood
Usually, people wouldn’t put Luna on this list. Okay, she’s weird, has a dubious taste and seems unrelated to problems. But despite this, this young woman is comprehensive and loyal, which is clearly enough for her to be here.
In addition, despite having to deal with pranks and hoaxes at school, Luna never considered changing who she is in order to please others. She doesn’t care what people might think of her and this is a remarkable attitude.
4. Minerva McGonagall
She’s the Gryffindor’s headmaster, transfiguration teacher, vice principal… Do you need more?
Even though she is a little rude sometimes, Minerva has always been very fair in all her decisions, in addition to being one of the best witches in history.
5. Bellatrix Lestrange
Okay, we know she’s bloodthirsty, sadistic, violent and really enjoys causing pain and suffering on others, but there’s something important to be emphasized about her.
Feminism is by definition the pursuit of gender equality and the Harry Potter saga has a villainous woman as strong as the most important male villain who is Lord Voldemort.
Bellatrix’s strength is undeniable: she isn’t submissive at all!
6. Hermione Granger
Did you really think our most beloved little witch would be left out?
Hermione is dedicated, hardworking, intelligent, brave and always goes after what she wants. She struggles for what she finds to be true regardless of others’ opinions. Hermione is also an extremely loyal friend and always defends who is important to her, no matter what.
In addition, this girl has her own interests and priorities. She wants to be a great witch and hold a position of respect at the Ministry of Magic.
Finally, the truth must be told: if it were not for Hermione Granger, Harry Potter would have died in the first book.
