Her Campus FSU has partnered with Her Campus Harvard to raise awareness for National ASK (Asking Saves Kids) Day.

Today is the first day of summer, which for most of us means the true beginning of backyard barbeques, long days at the pool, quality time with friends, and memorable family vacations. And with all the excitement and gatherings summer brings, it is important to remember a key safety precaution.

June 21st also marks National ASK (Asking Saves Kids) Day, a campaign created by the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence and the American Academy of Pediatrics to promote children’s safety in homes where parents own firearms.

Because gun safety is a relevant and important issue, the ASK Campaign seeks to make teens, college students, and parents more aware of the accidents that can result from guns not being properly stored.

Stats show that 1 out of 3 homes with kids have guns, and 89% of unintentional shooting deaths involving children happen in the home, most due to children playing with a loaded gun when their parents aren’t around. And from 2012 to 2014, 5,790 children were treated in an emergency room for firearm-related injuries, 21% of which were unintentional.

Growing up in a home where my father owned firearms, stored safely and locked away, I fortunately never had access to them. However, I realize that many parents may not acknowledge the risk firearms pose for their children or even their children’s friends.

The ASK Campaign is all about making sure that people feel comfortable asking about their own or a child’s wellbeing when going to another person’s house. If you feel uncomfortable or simply want to ensure the safety of those around you, keep these tips in mind:

1) First, understand that a responsible firearm-owner should always have his/her guns unloaded, separated from ammunition, and locked away if there are children in the house.

2) Don’t be afraid to ask. If you are babysitting for your neighbors, check if there is any safety hazards you should be aware of. If you’re heading to a friend’s house for the first time, ask to make sure that any guns they may have are secured.

3) Don’t feel intimidated. Remember that the ASK Campaign’s purpose is to ensure your and everyone else’s safety.

#JustASK, because it’s time to end unnecessary injuries or deaths due to firearms.
