Dear little brother,
First of all, I want you to know that I feel pretty lucky to have been able to watch you grow up. You’re becoming a pretty rad dude, and I’m more than proud to call you my brother. However, I have some advice for you as you continue on in your life’s journey.
1. Life will get better after high school.
I’m not going to lie to you, high school really sucks. But trust me- once you have that diploma in your hand, the world opens up to you. From there, life stops becoming mandatory-everything you do is your choice. Work hard during these next four years, because what happens after is so worth it.
2. You can do absolutely ANYTHING in life that you want to.
I know that sounds really cheesy, and people have been telling you that since Kindergarten, but it’s true. You can choose any path you want to in life, and if you go for it, you will achieve it. And I will always be there to offer you advice and help you discover what your calling is.
3. Don’t be afraid to try new things!
I am always experimenting with what I want to do. Don’t be afraid to try out for basketball or start writing poetry. You don’t have to be good at it‒no one is at first. You just have to try.
4. You can go to any college you want to.
I love Gustavus, and I think it’s the perfect place for me to be. However, I found this college after years of searching and touring and applying. As much as I think it would be cool for you to become a Gustie after me, I would rather you find the place that’s best for you. Search around, look for programs that interest you, and go where YOU want to go.
5. Know that I love you!
I know we get into fights sometimes, and I can be really cranky sometimes (especially before I’ve had my coffee in the morning). But I always love you, and I’m so glad Mom and Dad gave me the best gift in the world fourteen years ago: a little brother. Even though I’m away at college for months at a time, I will always be there for you when you need me. I’m so proud of all you’ve achieved so far in life, and I am excited to see where these next years will take you.
