I can picture it now. Lying on a raft, floating around with a glass of lemonade in my hand, listening to the radio station The Highway. Ah, what a perfect moment. But first, the pool must be opened, and that’s what National Pool Opening Day is all about.
While this spring has definitely been on the cooler side, warmer weather is upon us, and guess what that means? People all over the country will begin opening their pools, and this weekend kicks off the festivities. I know some people open their pools at the end of April, while others do so in May, and still others wait until June.
My family usually opens our pool on Memorial Day weekend because nothing screams the start of summer like a barbeque and an uncovered pool.
Though the actual process of taking a cover off of a pool is frustrating and time-consuming, the end result is always worth it.
As a kid, there was nothing I looked forward to more than the first swim of the season, and it’s still something I think about long before the weather gets nice. Swimming in my backyard pool was a staple of my childhood, and I’ve made so many memories in those 4’4 inches of water. I’m so thankful that I was able to have experiences like sunscreen fights and pool games and swimming contests.
No matter how old I get, I know that having a fun, relaxing day in the pool will always be one of my favorite ways to spend the summer months. Although I love the beach just as much as the next person (and that’s A LOT, by the way), there’s something about just lounging around in my backyard that puts a smile on my face.
So, here’s to another summer of pool days and sunrays! Summer 2018, where are you?
