This Gorgeous Prom Dress Made from Trash Bags Is Actually My Forever Mood

Reminiscing about my senior year of high school makes me think of graduation, starting a new chapter in my life, prom… and how catty and mean high school girls can be! When Amber Scholl was called “trashy,” she thought of the perfect revenge: Make a prom dress completely out of trash bags. And that’s exactly what she did, Teen Vogue reports (yas, queen!). I assume by her results she would have been best dressed at her prom by far. She documented the process on Twitter, writing, “When someone calls you trashy, make a dress out of trash bags and prove them fabulously correct”.

I aspire to be this good at not only clapping back at negative people, but also having the talent to even make a dress this gorgeous out of trash bags, no less. With over 1.6 million subscribers on YouTube, Scholl is a force to be reckoned with. And when her followers asked her for a prom-themed tutorial, she certainly delivered.

Published on April 22, the video has already amassed over a million views, while her original tweet is racking up likes and retweets way into the thousands. This makes me wonder: Are trash bags going to be a “must-have” for prom this season?

There’s a good reason that the video has gained so much attention recently. Not only is the concept unique and sure to stand out in a sea of sequins and lace, but the video itself is detailed and descriptive. So, if you’re up for the challenge and ready to rock some trash bags, you can recreate her design at home.

Scholl started out with a dress that she found at the thrift store. She then covered the bodice in black trash-bag rosettes and sewed matching flowers to the bottom of it. It of course helps that the dress itself is gorgeous, with a sheer skirt and bikini-cut bottom sure to stand out on its own.

As creative as the idea was, Scholl claims that she never expected to go viral, saying, “I feel so loved and am amazed by the Internet––how many people you can reach is amazing.” She also added some much-needed advice for those attending prom, saying, “Have fun, and don’t take it too seriously––the whole point is to have a great night and feel beautiful, whatever that means to you.” Whether that means dancing in a trash bag or having a great night in a dress that you saved up for the entire year to buy, it’s your night (and your dress), so have fun with it!

I personally remember being so stressed for my high school prom. My hair, makeup, date and most importantly, my dress, had to be absolutely perfect. While I fondly look back on going dress shopping with my mom and getting my hair done with friends, at the end of the day, (as corny as it sounds) the night was made special by celebrating the end of high school with those close to me. Hopefully, Scholl has inspired as many girls as possible to get creative and have fun with their special night!
