5 Signs That You Are Outgrowing a Relationship

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utica chapter.

Whether this relationship is a friendship or a romantic one, it is a part of life to outgrow people and relationships. Though the idea of ending a relationship can be a difficult topic to wrap your mind around, it is sometimes necessary for your own personal growth. People are not always meant to stay in your life, but the relationship was meant to teach you a lesson. Growth is about learning, maturing, and accepting life. So, even though you may not want to let go of that person it might be the very thing holding you back from reaching your true potential. Here are 5 signs that you need are outgrowing a friendship or romantic relationship.

1. You no longer have the feeling of sharing commonalities

Not every relationship requires that people are similar or share similarities. However, if you discover that there is a reoccurring feeling that your relationship is not the same you may need to reevaluate your friendship or relationship. There are stages that people go through in life and if you feel that you are beyond the point at which another is in terms of growth it may be time to move forward. Needless to say struggles and conflicts are normal in all relationships. But, it is situations in which there is continuous insecurity that may indicate a need for change.

2. The relationship is not prioritized

If there is an obvious feeling of distance between each parties it may be due to the fact that an adequate amount of time is not spent with one another like how it once was. Often times when a relationship is not prioritized at least one of the parties will feel as though they have been excluded. It is very common to feel a disconnection when the relationship is not being prioritized.

3. You are seeking new relationships

Majority of the time seeking new relationships is a positive thing. When one is pursuing a relationship in place of an old one this can be bad. It is best to have closure with a relationship before trying to replace others with new people.

4. Their presence is draining emotionally and financially

Helping a friend or partner is a great thing, but if you notice that you are always picking up the slack it should be brought to the other’s attention. A friendship or romantic relationship is 50-50. This refers to a give and take kind of dynamic. Be sure to analyze how others help you out in times of trouble to really test their loyalty and intention. Trust is a big part of building relationships. So, it is important that you know for sure your friends or partner will not take advantage of you.

5. Constant judgment or criticism

Growth is a part of the journey in every individual’s life. It is okay to be in different stages of life but, if those who surround you are not moving forward with you then they might be judgmental or critical of you. This is a red flag and if you are experiencing this you should really evaluate resolution or closure of the relationship. This does not refer to a one time occurrence. Constantly feeling as though your friends or partner are feeding into negativity is not a good feeling. To reach your greatest capacity of potential any form of consistent negativity needs to be let go.

In no way is this article meant to convince you to take a certain action, but only to encourage you to blossom into the person you are meant to be. I have recently felt that I have outgrown a relationship and though it can be tough to deal with it serves a purpose and is only meant to better you as a person. I found it important to encourage those to let go of dead weight and move forward if need be. Optimism, love, and growth are what will mold you as a person. It is important that you put yourself first and promote self-love so that you may reach your true potential.
