Everyone knows that college is a lot of work. You’ve got multiple classes with tons of readings, quizzes, tests, and projects for each one. I’m sure that we all have great time management skills which allow us to get all of this work done… or not. Either way, us college kids definitely need time to blow off some steam and have a good time. Unfortunately, a lot of fun things in college cost money. But not everything! So, if you’re tight on cash and want to find something fun for you and your friends to do, check out these ideas.
1. Watch a Movie
This is a classic activity that I’m sure everyone has indulged in. But you can make it your own by having a theme, picking a specific decade of movies, or any number of fun combinations. Most students have subscriptions (or at least their parents do) to movie streaming sites, but even if you don’t most colleges have a movie website with brand new movies to watch for free. (For example, Boston College has https://movies-bc-edu.swankmp.net/#/browse)
2. Go to a Museum
Many museums will allow students in for free as long as they show a valid school ID, or at the very least they’ll give student discounts. If you and your friends are looking to go out but are strapped for cash, museums are a great place to check out. Plus, there are such a variety of museums that there will almost always be something to entertain everyone.
3. Go to a Park
Another obvious choice but one that many college kids forget these days when technology is so prevalent in our lives. One of my favorite memories from my freshman year is going to a park and kicking around a soccer ball, playing Kan Jam, and tossing a Frisbee around with a bunch of my friends. Plus, it’s always good to go out and enjoy the fresh air.
4. Have a Game Night
Who doesn’t love a good game night?! Gather a group of friends, have everyone bring their favorite game, and get ready for a long night of excitement. Whether it’s playing cards, bringing out Cards Against Humanity, venturing into a game of Monopoly, or even making up your own wacky games, a game night is a sure-fire way to have an enjoyable night without spending any money.
5. Have a Dance Party
When in doubt, dance it out. Sometimes the best night is just a wild and crazy dance party with the besties. It may not be a cool club or bar, but you can still have a good time. If you want to make it special, get dressed up, do your makeup, and create your own signature drinks in your room (obvs if you’re over 21 only!). Create a playlist and just have a good time. Make the night your own even if it does take place in your dorm room.
While there are so many fun activities and places to go that do cost money, creating your own adventures without spending a dime sometimes turns out to be an even better time. The above activities will raise your amount of fun without lowering your bank account. The main ingredient to having a good time in college, though, is really the people you surround yourself with. If you’ve got a solid group of friends who you can laugh with doing absolutely anything, then you’ll always be ready for a fun time.
