“Never Again.”
February 14, 2018 was supposed to be a celebrated holiday like it has for years: Valentine’s Day. This year, the holiday that is typically celebrated to express love, has now been imprinted with the horrific event of the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglass High School. The event left 17 students and faculty dead and multiple injured, making this event the deadliest mass shooting in American history.
The March For Our Lives campaign was started by the Stoneman Douglass High School students to fight for the removal of assault weapons and stricter gun control laws to be implanted to keep children and families safe from gun violence all over America. Protesting and pushing politicians to make more of an effort in improving gun control laws, this is one battle the students want to win. Not for themselves, but for the fellow classmates, teachers, siblings, and friends, they had lost due to the horrific shooting.
On March 24, 2018, the MFOL campaign protested in the streets of cities all over America to make a statement: “Never Again”. Families marched in protest to push more gun control laws to make safer environments to prevent another tragedy like that of Stoneman Douglass. Celebrities also pitched in and stood by the families, such as Camilla Cabello, Demi Lovato, and Ariana Grande. Others that weren’t able to march side-by-side with their fellow citizens sent their love and encouragement to the campaign such as Amy Poehler, Harry Styles, and Dwayne Johnson.
The MFOL’s plan is to push Congress to implement stricter laws on gun control to keep the country safer. With the help of the American people, their mission and movement continue to thrive, and continue to be encouraged by the people. Even though the first march has happened, the campaign still strives to keep pushing for safer laws and hopes to push forward until justice is served and everyone is truly safe everywhere.
