We’re in the final stretch of the semester and we all know what that means, graduation!
While most of us are excited to be done with college and start new, grown-up lives, some of us are dreading this time as well.
It’s so exciting to see all of our friends graduating and moving on. However, if we’re really honest, it also sucks.
We’ve been here just as long, working just as hard and yet, we’ll be stuck here another semester, year, or even longer. And one thing we’re sick and tired of hearing but at the same time is oh so truthful, is that “it’s okay.”
It’s okay to be upset. It’s okay to be mad. It’s okay to be aggravated. But most importantly, it’s okay not to be leaving “on time.” There are dozens of reasons that we aren’t graduating. Everything from a change (or addition) of major or minor, taking time off, studying abroad, switching schools, or dropping classes is a completely acceptable reason and although it doesn’t feel like it, it’s valid.
It’s normal to change or major, its normal to decide you have absolutely no desire to be a teacher, a scientist, an accountant, or a doctor for the rest of your life. And honestly, it’s better to figure it out now than ten years down the road. The important thing is that you figure out what you want to do and do your best at it. Try your hardest and keep pushing yourself toward that finish line.
So, while it’s 100% acceptable to feel angry, jealous, or even regretful watching all of your friends and classmates graduate while you’ve got another semester or year left, its also important to remember that you’re where you are for a reason.
Everyone moves through life at their own pace and the important thing is to remember that if you’re happy and you’re getting a degree, that’s all that matters. Graduating on time can all mean different things and sometimes it’s okay to be behind others, but it’ll pay off, in the end, knowing you still accomplished college and not everyone can say that.
