Acne is often a sore subject for women to talk about. It causes insecurity and makes women feel ashamed of their own skin. While it may be hard for some to imagine embracing their acne, social media is making “acne positivity” a trend. This growing community encouraging acne positivity is trying to get rid of the idea of stigmatizing zits and blemishes.

Social media influencers and bloggers are posting unedited photos of their acne. This community provides comfort and acknowledgement that not everyone has perfect skin and that it is acceptable to have imperfections. It is a system of support for women in any stage of their skin journey from acne, possible treatments, and simply having blemishes that aren’t clearing up. The community does not want to encourage women to seek treatment if they do not want to or cannot. It just wants to acknowledge all aspects of skin care and acne.

The social media trend has expanded beyond influencers and bloggers to celebrities. Kendall Jenner graced the Golden Globes red carpet with a breakout-ridden face. Chrissy Teigen took to social media to post photos of her inflamed and splotchy period skin. The star of the hit show Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Rachel Bloom also posted on social media to showcase her face with acne. She stated the blemishes were a result of hormones and stress. It is reassuring to know that stars are just like everyone else.

Everyone faces issues with acne and the pressure to appear perfect. No one should be shamed for something they cannot control. Hopefully this movement continues to grow and will be acknowledged in magazines, stores, and entertainment.
