Chances are, you’ve probably seen a Claddagh ring either in a store, on a friend’s finger, or on Becca’s hand while the worst breakup in Bachelor history was going down.
They’re cute right? Well, there’s more to these rings than meets the eye. If you don’t own one of these Irish gems, it’s probably time you look into getting one. Every girl should own one, and not just because it’s a cute fashion accessory.
I personally always liked the design of Claddagh rings. However, it wasn’t until my parents went to Ireland and brought back original Claddagh rings for my sister and me that I really started to appreciate the true meaning behind the ring.
For those who don’t know, here’s what everything on the ring symbolizes:
The hands: Friendship
The heart: Love
The crown: Loyalty
Even the way you choose to wear it has meaning:
Heart facing inward: In a relationship
Heart facing outward: Single
For me, wearing my Claddagh isn’t just a fashion statement or a nod to my Irish heritage, but a reminder to be thankful for all the people I love whenever I look at it.
When I look down at my right ring finger, I see the heart facing inward, instantly reminding me of my loving boyfriend. As I continue to look at the heart, I think of my family and how important they are to me. I then see the hands, reminding me of everyone in my life who I can always count on. Finally, I look at the crown, which reminds me of the loyalty I’m shown from all the people I love and the loyalty I feel towards them.
The Claddagh is more than just a ring. It’s a constant reminder of the truly important things in life. It can sometimes be hard to forget to look at the big picture when facing the daily stresses and pressures of life. We focus on that one bad exam grade, or that one person we feel betrayed us. No matter what obstacles life throws at you, you deserve to be reminded that there are bigger and better aspects of your life that are more worthy of your attention.
No matter what life throws at you, you are loved, you have friends who value you, and you have people who will always be by your side. You don’t need to be Irish to proudly flaunt this stylish, meaningful reminder in the form of a ring.
