Police are currently investigating a shooting that occurred Wednesday, March 7 at Huffman High School in Birmingham, Alabama that left one dead and two injured.

The incident occurred near dismissal around 3:30 p.m. when at least two gun shots were reportedly heard. The school was briefly placed on lockdown and authorities were called to the scene where, upon initial investigation, it was determined that the shooting was “accidental.”

The two victims, one male and one female both 17, were taken to the hospital in critical condition. Birmingham police have stated that an adult was also injured in the incident, but their condition is unknown. The female student, who has been identified as Courtlin Arrington, was pronounced deceased at the hospital. Arrington was a graduating senior at Huffman High School whose 18th birthday was only 30 days away and had dreams of attending college to become a nurse. The male student was treated and has been released from the hospital.

The school was closed on Thursday, March 8 so that police could conduct their investigation, which is now being called a “death investigation” rather than an “accidental shooting.” The weapon has been found and a person of interest has been taken into police custody, however details surrounding this information have yet to be released to the public.

Birmingham Mayor, Randall Woodfin, has released the following statement concerning the incident: “We are not just talking about some person, talking about losing a part of our future. Our hearts are heavy. I think it’s really important we find a way to mourn with this family.”

This is the second school shooting at Huffman High School in the last two years.
