It’s easy to spend the entirety of a film admiring the make-up and wondering how they achieved such an iconic look when before you know it you’ve reached the final credits with no idea what the plot was all about. I’ve put together the top on-screen make-up looks of all time, with a few ideas of how you can recreate them too.
Velma Kelly (Chicago, 2002)
Set in the glamorous Jazz Age of the 1920s, it’s no surprise that Velma’s flapper-inspired look has made it onto the list. Her smokey eye, red lip and perfect skin combined with those fluttery lashes make her practically get away with murder- and all that jazz.
Audrey Hepburn (Roman Holiday, 1953)
Audrey’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s look is probably the first one that springs to mind, but it was actually back in the 1950s when her make-up artist Wally Westmore began to experiment with her look. In Roman Holiday, Audrey wears a pillar-box red lip alongside her famous bold brows. Audrey was all about the lashes too, but couldn’t stand clumps. It is rumoured her make-up artist used a pin after applying her mascara to separate her lashes. Don’t try this at home!
Blair Waldorf and Serena Van Der Woodsen (Gossip Girl, 2007-2012)
The make-up looks in Gossip Girl were hit and miss, just like Blair and Serena’s friendship. But unlike Jenny Humphrey, Blair and Serena often got it right with their natural but glamorous look. Use a beauty blender to apply foundation for sheer coverage to ensure it still looks like skin and go for a pink lip rather than bold shades. XOXO.
Rachel, Phoebe and Monica (Friends, 1994-2004)
The make-up in Friends is iconic for one thing: the classic 90s brown lipstick. For a modern, toned down version of this look, try MAC’s ‘whirl’ lipstick. However, Jennifer Anniston did also once let it slip in an interview that she often wore MAC’s ‘Paramount’ lipstick while on set, which can be spotted when Rachel is sporting a red-toned brown lip, so opt for this one if Rachel is your favourite of the famous trio.
Queen Elsa (Frozen, 2013)
She may be a cartoon, but you’ve just got to let that go. Elsa’s purple-toned and glittery make-up will make blue and green eyes pop and suit most skin tones. I think it’s safe to say Elsa definitely owns the Urban Decay Naked 3 palette. Talking snowman is optional.
