When you hear the word “perm,” you’re likely transported back to a time in middle school when you convinced yourself it was a good idea to style your hair that way(and were not prepared for the tragedy that still haunts you to this day). According to Teen Vogue, actress Emma Stone took the permanently-curly plunge with her friend and makeup artist Rachel Goodwin. Goodwin shared the entire process with us on Instagram, just in case the scarring memory of your perm days was starting to get fuzzy.Â
Goodwin captioned the photo, “We have a permanent bond! Some friends get tattoos, well we get perms! We’re here to tell you that they are BACK and they’re not your grandmas perm! Especially when you are in the amazing hands of @mararoszak and @bykileyfitz at @mare_salon#curlyisthenewstraight this is the #newwave.”Â
And the worst part is? While you likely looked like a show poodle (at best), Stone will probably rock her perm in the way that you imagined you could. This is likely due to the fact that Stone didn’t get the traditional ’80s perm that you’re imagining. Instead, she used a technique called a “digital wave.” Glamour explains that this is more of a “diluted version of perm solution, whereby a stylist applies it to your hair, then wraps sections of hair around metal rollers,” with the outcome being hair that is more casually curled and less dramatic than the signature style associated with the term.Â
Fans are impatiently waiting to see the final result of Stone’s perm. For now, all we have to speculate from is a photo of her wet hair, which, admittedly, does look more curly.Â
Who knows? Maybe Stone is about to start a new wave of the perm.Â
