Every time you feel as if you’ve watched everything on Netflix, it doesn’t take long for the streaming service to release more shows that we must binge watch. Whether it’s a Netflix original or a show on TV, there’s this strange need to visually consume everything that’s on there. Jumping from one binge to another has become a sport between friends, especially when watching the same show. So, there’s nothing more satisfying than finishing a show to talk to your friends about.
That’s how it was with me and my best friend when I finally finished It’s the End of the F***ing World. I had to talk to her about every little thing because there was so much left to speculate about the main characters, James and Alyssa, and how their relationship and actions affect those around them.
It’s the End of the F***ing World tells the story of James, who believes he’s a psychopath. He’s become bored with killing animals and feels ready to kill something bigger– a human. After a brief interaction with Alyssa, a witty, outspoken classmate, he chooses her to be his first victim. When she suggests they run away together, James agrees with the aim of finding the perfect opportunity to kill her. They set off on a road trip across England, and their relationship slowly begins to develop throughout their trip.
At first, it’s kind of hard to connect with either James or Alyssa because they’re so guarded. James doesn’t speak as much, preferring to follow along with Alyssa’s actions because he needs to get closer to her to kill her, and as he said in the show “sometimes I just let things happen. Even though I didn’t want them to”. In comparison, Alyssa uses her brashness to appear calm and in control. However, it’s because of the use of voice over and the eventual act at the end of episode 3, that the audience can feel a connection with these characters. Almost as if we’ve finally gained their trust.

We realize that James is more than a self-diagnosed psychopath whose mission is to kill people, but a 17-year-old trying to deal with pain the only way he knows how. Alyssa isn’t just an uncaring, “a bit of a nymphomaniac,” troublemaker, but a teenage girl acting out because she isn’t receiving the attention she needs. We’re able to understand their decision to run away because their reasons are realistic. Even the way the way James and Alyssa’s relationship develops feels honest and sweet because their relationship isn’t built on their personal problems; instead it’s built on trust and loyalty that continues to strengthen it.
However, it’s that same trust and loyalty that causes trouble for whoever is not on their side. Their relationship is far from perfect or sane, but it works for them. They may be codependent, but as a fan of the show, I’m going along for the ride.
It’s the End of the F***ing World is a well-written, captivating show to watch on Netflix. Though there hasn’t been any confirmation about a season 2, the creators of the show are more than open to making it happen, and I can’t wait.
