New Year, new books to buy, and probably new bookshelves for all of them. 2017 brought us many exciting new releases and conclusions to well-loved series. 2018 will be no exception. Here are some of the highly anticipated book releases of 2018.
Disclaimer: These books are in no specific order.
Â
1. Throne of Glass Book 7 (September 2018)
This is my most anticipated release of the new year. This book is the conclusion to the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas, a high fantasy series following the adventures of an assassin named Celaena Sardothien. This book will hopefully deliver an epic conclusion to the story and break some hearts along the way. Get your tissues ready!
Â
2. A Court of Frost and Starlight (May 2018)
This book is not a full-length novel per se; it’s a novella that will bridge the gap between the recently concluded A Court of Thorns and Roses series and the new spin-off series that will be set in the same world that while following the lives of other characters.
Â
3. Queen of Air and Darkness (August 2018)
This book is the final book in The Dark Artifices trilogy by Cassandra Clare, which is the third series set in the shadowhunters’ World. It will follow the Blackthornes as they make one final stand against the evil that has been plaguing their family for centuries.
Â
Â
4. War Storm (May 2018)
War Storm is the fourth and final book in the Red Queen series by Victoria Aveyard. Originally, King’s Cage was going to be the conclusion, but due to the success of the series, a fourth book deal was made. The series has gotten better and better with each book; hopefully, the conclusion will not disappoint, and Mare Barrow’s story has a satisfying ending.
Â
5. A Reaper at the Gates (June 2018)
A Reaper at the Gates is the third installment in the Ember Quartet by Sabaa Tahir. The release had been set back by a year. However, Tahir’s release was pushed back due to a cover change because she wanted to see a brown girl on the covers which is a wonderful way for an author to use their influence in the creative process. The first novel follows a young woman of color fighting to survive in a world inspired by the Roman empire. The third installment honors the occurrences of the first two, leading up its faithful readers to the upcoming finale.
Â
6. Catwoman: Soulstealer (August 2018)
As part of the new DC Icons YA series, fans of Sarah J. Maas will get a taste of her new book— one that is not set in the worlds of Erilea and Prythian—when this novel about the famed superhero/villain is released next year. This book will follow Catwoman as she wreaks havoc on Gotham City alongside Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn. If you liked Leigh Bardugo’s Warbringer from the same DC Icons series; then, this one should be on your to-read list.
Â
7. Restore Me (March 2018)
Fans of Shatter Me rejoice! In this fourth installment of the series, Tahereh Mafi has revived Juliette’s world of chaos to bring us more of her life as new Supreme Commander and the responsibility that comes with it. Let’s not forget we get more Warner as well!
Â
8. Legendary (May 2018)
The sequel to the magical Caraval by Stephanie Garber is sure to pack a punch. Garber first introduced us to the world of Caraval with the first book where our protagonists embarked on a mysterious and suspenseful journey to an island. Â Essentially, it is a game, but it soon has them risking it all when one of them is kidnaped by the organizer of this event, Legend. The sequel will follow immediately with the events that are settled at the end of the first book, and we cannot wait to find out what happens next!
Â
9. Leah on the Offbeat (April 2018)
Becky Albertalli’s newest release follows Leah Burke’s life. She’s your basic girl-band drummer and Simon Spier’s best friend. Yes! The Simon from Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda (soon to be Love, Simon the movie). Leah usually is on beat when it comes to her drumming, but in real life, it’s a different story. Dealing with problems such as acceptance, life choices, and change, Leah has to ultimately embrace who she is while trying not to let everything she cares about the most fall apart.
Â
10. The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy (October 2018)
The sequel to the hilarious The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue will be narrated by Monty’s sister Felicity, and it features more traveling, pirates, and a science girl gang. Sounds as weird and hilarious as the first one!
Â
11. From Twinkle, with Love (May 2018)
From Sandhya Menon, author of last year’s hit When Dimple Met Rishi, comes another quirky romance. This story follows Twinkle Mehra, an aspiring filmmaker who wants to tell as many stories as possible. She is offered an opportunity to direct a film for the upcoming Summer Festival, and she quickly finds herself working alongside her longtime crush. Needless to say, this shall be very cute, romantic, and hilarious.
Â
Â
12. Everless (January 2018)
This debut fantasy novel follows the kingdom of Sempera where time is the currency, extracted from blood. People need to sell their blood to live; doesn’t that sound fun and not scary at all? The main character, Jules, is forced to return to the Gerlings’ manor in order to buy more time for her dying father. As it is expected, stuff goes down.
Â
13. The Hazel Wood (January 2018)
A mysterious and dark twist on fairy tales explores what happens when the line between reality and fantasy is blurred. Seventeen-year-old Alice is sent on a whirlwind ride when her mother is kidnaped by a stranger that claims to be from Hinterland, a supernatural world from Alice’s grandmother’s cult-classic book. Teaming up with her classmate, Ellery Finch, Alice sets off to save her mother by traveling to the one place she was told never to wander into the Hazel Wood.
Â
Â
14. Obsidio (March 2018)
This sci-fi novel is the third book in the Illuminae Files series by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff, and it promises to break hearts. Following everything that has happened in the previous two books, a final battle rages on between land and space where our heroes are forced to save the world while risking it all.
Â
15. The Belles (February 2018)
After being pushed back, The Belles will finally arrive at bookstores! This book follows a girl named Camellia Beaureguard, who wishes to become the Belle chosen by the Queen of Orléans to live in the royal palace and to be recognized as the most talented Belle in the land. However, as soon as she arrives at the palace, she finds out that being a Belle is not all she thought it was.
All in all, we can agree that 2018 will surely be a great year for book nerds alike with diverse, inclusive, and simply badass releases. Happy reading!
