Since my first semester in university, I’ve always taken a full course load. I also took summer classes for two years in a row. As of this spring, I’ll officially have all of the credits I need to graduate – but I’m choosing not to.
Some people think I’m crazy for doing this. I’ve heard, “Why on earth?! Get out while you can!” from friends who want to get their degree ASAP. Maybe you’re thinking the same thing. Nonetheless, I have my reasons; some of them are extremely practical and others are just a little self-indulgent. Here they are:
1) Medical Insurance.

Even though prescriptions are now free for people 24 and under who are covered by OHIP, medical treatment costs a lot without insurance. This is especially true when specialist appointments are taken into consideration. If I remain a student for a few more months, I get to enjoy these benefits and save my cash during that time.
2) The Love of Learning.

As a self-proclaimed nerd, I’ll admit that I love to learn. The idea of taking a few courses just for the fun of it without having to worry about degree requirements or scholarships sounds fantastic to me.
3) Course Options.

As a double-major, I’ve listened to my friends talk about incredible optional courses they’ve taken. Imagine studying comic books, dinosaurs, or magic, and having it count towards your degree! Although I took many courses that I found interesting, many of my options were limited so I could satisfy both parts of my degree. Spring or summer courses will give me the opportunity to take courses I never thought I could.
4) Job Opportunities.

As a part time student, I’ll still be able to work a full-time job. I might also gain some new skills if I take courses outside my field of study, which always looks good on a resume.
5) Fall Graduation.

I love the idea of graduating in the fall. The colours and weather are beautiful, so yes, I’m looking forward to great photos. I like the thought of a smaller graduation ceremony as well.
I know that purposely choosing to graduate a few months behind schedule may still seem crazy to some of you, but it’s the right thing for me.
