10 Movies to Watch Out for in 2018

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at York U chapter.

2017 was a great year for movies, and I am happy to announce that it looks like 2018 is going to have some great films as well. Even though you might still be trying to catch up with this year’s best films, it’s never too early to start pre-ordering tickets for the new and exciting films coming out soon. I have compiled a list of ten of the most exciting films coming out next year, so you can start marking your calendars right away.

Proud Mary January 12th 2018

Taraji P. Henson, star of Empire and Hidden Figures, plays the role of Mary, a professional assassin whose life turns around when she meets a young boy who she orphaned. This film is directed by Babak Najafi (London is Falling and Sebbe) and written by John S. Newman and Christian Swegal. It looks like 2018 is going to open with a badass woman protagonist. Keep them rollin’ in.

Black Panther February 16th 2018

There are a lot of superhero films coming out in 2018, but I promise Black Panther is the only one on this list. This film takes place after Captain America: Civil War when King T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) returns to Wakanda and defend his kingdom while stopping a world war. Black Panther is the first black superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and is the first Marvel film by a black director. So if you’re going to see a superhero movie next year, make sure it’s this one and be a part of history

A Wrinkle In Time March 9th 2018

Source: IMDb

Based on the novel by Madeline L’Engle, A Wrinkle in Time is a film about Meg Murry (Storm Reid) trying to save her astrophysicist father (Chris Pine) from a distant planet with the help of Mrs. Which (Oprah Winfrey), Mrs. Whatsit (Reese Witherspoon), and Mrs. Who (Mindy Kaling). If the cast isn’t exciting enough, this film is directed by Ava DuVernay, director of Selma and 13th. A Wrinkle In Time promises to be a YA adaptation like no other, and you definitely shouldn’t miss it.

Ocean’s Eight June 8th 2018

Despite comedian John Mulaney’s claims, Gary Ross proves that you can, in fact, have a heist of women. Written by George Clooney and Steven Soderbergh, Ocean’s Eight follows Danny Ocean’s estranged sister, Debbie (Sandra Bullock), as she tries to plan a heist at the Met Gala. Debbie’s crack team includes Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, Sarah Paulson, Mindy Kaling, and Awkwafina. It is truly a blessing to see so many powerful and iconic ladies in one film this year, and I can hardly wait to see how this crew works together.

The Incredibles 2 June 15th 2018

Source: IMDb

I’m sure any millennial and GEN X readers will remember the fantastic film that was The Incredibles, and its accompanying short film, Jack Jack Attack. The long awaited Incredibles 2 is going to take place pretty much right where the last one left off. While Elastigirl is out saving the world, Bob is left home to look after the children, who have to battle The Underminer as they discover Jack Jack’s powers. The best part of this continuation is that pretty much all of the original cast is returning, including Samuel L. Jackson as Frozone.

Boy Erased September 28th 2018

Source: Popsugar

This film is based on Garrard Conley’s Boy Erased: A Memoir, which is about his experience in gay conversion therapy. This true life story takes place when Garrard, played by Lucas Hedges of Moonrise Kingdom and Manchester By the Sea, is outed to his father (Russel Crowe), the Baptist pastor of his small American town, and his mother (Nicole Kidman). He is given the ultimatum to enroll in a conversion therapy program or be cut out of the community. In early stages of development, this film was actually caught in a bidding war between Netflix, Annapurna Pictures, Focus Features, and Amazon Studios, so you know it has to be good.

Mary Queen of Scots November 2nd 2018

Source: IMDb

Despite being very obvious Oscar bait, Mary Queen of Scots should still be on your watchlist. This is Josie Rourke’s film directing debut, though she has directed a large number of plays in London beforehand. This film is about the dramatic and eventful life of Mary Stuart, played by Saoirse Ronan of Lady Bird and Brooklyn. It explores the relationship between Queen Mary and her cousin, Elizabeth I (Margot Robbie), in a game of thrones, marriage, and independence.

Widows November 16th 2018

Source: Top250

If you loved Gone Girl, then I have great news for you: crime thrillers author Gillian Flynn is writing a film with Steve McQueen based on the 1983 series Widows. According to Wikipedia, the plot is “four armed robbers are killed in a failed heist attempt, only to have their widows step up for the job.” And these widows just so happen to be played by Viola Davis, Elizabeth Debicki, Michelle Rodriguez, and Cynthia Erivo. It seems that 2018 will be the year of all-star, all-women heists.

The Miseducation of Cameron Post 2018

Source: Amazon

Combining two of the themes already seen on this list, The Miseducation of Cameron Post is based on a YA novel, by Emily M. Danforth, that follows Cameron Post (Chloe Grace Moretz) as she is forced to go to a gay conversion therapy camp after being caught with the prom queen. It will make its worldwide premiere at the Sundance Festival in January 2018, but there’s no word on when it will be released to the masses. The director and co-writer, Desiree Akhavan, has already made a name for herself at Sundance with her last film, Appropriate Behaviour, about a Persian bisexual woman living in Brooklyn, which you could always check out while you’re waiting for this film.

Lizzie 2018

Source: IMDb

Lizzie will also have its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2018. This film is based on the true story of Lizzie Borden and the ax-murders of her parents. Lizzie Borden will be played by Chloe Sevigny, and Kristen Stewart will play Bridget Sullivan, the Irish maid who saw the murders and whose testimony helped acquit Lizzie. The murders were never solved, but hopefully this film will offer some insight into this crazy case.

It really does look like there will be some great movies in 2018. If I were you, I would put “Cineplex Gift Cards” at the top of my holiday wish list so I have the chance to see all of these films in their true glory. And even though it might seem like a long wait, you can always quench your excitement by watching the best films of 2017.
