The Wellness & Recreation Center is here! Well, it’s always been located at the Modesto A. Maidique campus at Florida International University (FIU), but the expansion has finally been completed. If you haven’t heard about the gym undergoing construction, then there’s a possibility that you live under a rock or that you’re a BBC student. Regardless of the two, the new expansion is a must-see.

FIU’s gym didn’t look the way that it does a year ago, much less when the gym first opened back in August of 2005. Known as the Recreation Center during that time, the gym has grown not only in its facilities, but also in how many people it holds. It underwent another construction in 2015 and was expected to have been completed in summer of 2017, but alas, it got post-poned to open December 4, 2017.

If you missed the ribbon ceremony and have yet to visit the gym, here’s a list of new additions to tempt to you to start working out.

The expansion includes:

  • A three-court basketball gymnasium, for a total of five indoor courts
  • 6,600 square feet of fitness space to accommodate new state-of-the-art cardio equipment including top brand names TechnoGym and Star Trac
  • A 6,500-square-foot strength room featuring TechnoGym, Hammer Strength and other branded equipment
  • 3,000 square feet of additional men’s and women’s locker rooms, including two gender-neutral shower/changing rooms and two gender-neutral bathrooms
  • Three new fitness rooms dedicated to activities such as spinning, martial arts and other types of small-group training
  • A dedicated office for personal trainers and clients
  • A racquetball/squash convertible court, plus one dedicated racquetball court
  • A new student lounge area with comfortable seating, TVs and device charging stations
  • West facing views of the Nature Preserve
  • A 1/12 mile indoor jogging/walking track
  • Two outdoor basketball courts
  • A sand volleyball court with spectator seating
  • A new south-facing grand entrance

The center doubled in size with an expansion that cost $25 million. So go out to the gym, use those new cardio machines or go jogging on the new track with your friend. Maybe grab a group of people and play volleyball in the sand while you avoid studying for that final exam.
