5 More Hot Chocolate Recipes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mt Holyoke chapter.

Last year, I wrote an article titled 5 Hot Chocolate Recipes For the Winter. Well, it’s winter again, so I thought that I would suggest five more hot chocolate recipes. I’m really excited to share these recipes and I hope you enjoy them. But first, here’s how you make a basic hot chocolate. Heat the cream and milk in a saucepan, then add the chocolate and stir till it melts. If you want it to be sweeter, add sugar. And that’s it. Simple, right? Now let’s see how you can take your hot chocolate to the next level.

1. Mint White Hot Chocolate

This recipe is a fun one. Start by heating the milk and cream like usual. But add white chocolate instead of regular chocolate and add peppermint extract. If you want to go all the way, you can even add green food coloring. Then you have a wonderfully decadent mint hot chocolate.

2. Vegan Hot Chocolate

If you are a vegan or lactose intolerant, this one is for you. Replace the milk and cream with soy milk and add a bit of cayenne pepper for a kick and you have hot chocolate. This also may be better for you if you have a cold this winter and want to avoid dairy products.

3. S’mores Hot Chocolate

This recipe is all about the preparation. There is a toasted graham cracker rim and broiled, gooey marshmallows on top. The hot chocolate recipe itself is pretty standard. Boil milk in a saucepan and then add in sugar, cocoa powder, etc. But then you add the marshmallows and syrup and you have s’mores hot chocolate. You can also sub whole milk for soy or other non dairy milks if you desire.

4. Orange Hot Chocolate

This is an unusual take on hot chocolate. It starts out the usual way, you boil the milk and stir in cocoa and sugar. Then you add the zest of the orange. It may seem odd at first, but if you think about it, chocolate and orange is a tasty flavor combination. Try it if you’re feeling fancy.

5. Hot Chocolate Bread Pudding

So this last one is not a drink, but it is delicious and tastes like hot chocolate. There are a lot more steps to this recipe, but if you are patient, I know the end result will be worth it. Start by whisking eggs, white sugar, and salt in a bowl and set aside. In a saucepan, whisk brown sugar, cocoa, milk, cream, chocolate, espresso powder, and cinnamon. Then combine the two mixtures and add some vanilla extract. Pour the whole thing over shredded bread and bake for 45 to 55 minutes. Then eat it as soon as you can.

And there you have it. I really hope you try these recipes out. Hopefully they will keep you warm and happy. Have a wonderful holiday season!
