There’s nothing better than a good face mask! Do-it-yourself face masks are a great skincare option because you can control which ingredients to use and how much of those ingredients go in the mask- which can be even better for those with sensitive skin or allergies. With nothing more than a few ingredients, a spoon, and a mixing bowl, you can easily make these masks with ingredients that you probably have already or that you can find at your local grocery and drugstores. Here are five easy-to-make DIY face masks for when you just need some “me time.”
1. Honey Mask
This is the most self-explanatory and easiest mask because it only has one ingredient: honey. That’s it. Rubbing honey all over your face may sound like a sticky mess, but it’s water soluble and washes off easily without leaving a sticky residue. Honey is a great moisturizer that’ll leave your skin feeling soft and it has anti-bacterial properties to help fight acne. Apply 100 percent raw honey in a thin layer to your face, leave it on for 10-15 minutes, rinse it off, and reap the benefits of one of the simplest DIY masks you can find.
2. Avocado Mask
This next one is for that classic green face mask lover. Divide an avocado in half and mash one of the halves. Then, mix the mashed avocado with one teaspoon of plain yogurt and one teaspoon of honey. Leave the mask on for 10-15 minutes and rinse it off. You could even use the other half of the avocado to make avocado toast while the mask works its magic.
3. Oatmeal Mask
Trust me, your dry winter skin will thank you when you use a mask as soothing as this next one. Cook 1/2 cup of oatmeal, 1/2 cup of water, and 1/2 cup of milk over medium heat for 5-6 minutes. While the mixture is cooling, apply one tablespoon of honey to your face and apply the oatmeal mixture after. Leave it on for 10-15 minutes before rinsing it off. Bonus tip: try preparing the oatmeal mixture overnight oats style by storing it in the fridge overnight instead of cooking it on the stove. The cooling effect will feel amazing on super dry skin!
Your beverage necessity may now become your beauty necessity too. Stir 3 teaspoons of coffee grounds and 3 teaspoons of milk (dairy, coconut, almond, or cashew milk all work) until a paste forms. Massage the paste into your skin and leave it on for 15-20 minutes. It may just be the wake up call your skin needs.
5. Charcoal Mask
Charcoal masks have been all the rage recently, so why not make your own? It’s no wonder why charcoal has become a staple ingredient in many beauty products because of its ability to clear out blackheads and pull oil out of pores. Mix 1/4 teaspoon of activated charcoal, 1/2 teaspoon of bentonite clay, 1/4 teaspoon of melted coconut oil, 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda, and 1 teaspoon of water in a small bowl, apply it to your face, and wash it off after 10 minutes.Â
Here are just some easy masks to get you started, but don’t be afraid to use your creativity. You can alter the recipes by adding or swapping ingredients to care for your skin’s specific needs, or just create a concoction of your own imagination!
