Recently Gigi Gorgeous posted a video on Youtube where she goes to Walmart and buys outfits for a week. Honestly, I love Gigi, but I feel like since she became like, uber famous, and started dating Nat Getty (who is part of a super-rich family,) she’s just really bougie. I understand that she has her own money and is very busy, so she does need to hire help and can buy a lot of designer brands and live that lifestyle, but this video felt very off-putting at parts with some of the things she says, does, and how she acts. I’m not going to run through the video minute-by-minute, but I’m going to talk about a few parts that rubbed me the wrong way.
I really want to stress that I am not hating on anyone who shops at Walmart. My issues lay with a very financially successful woman going to shop at Walmart for a “challenge” that we only see in the video. I personally have not seen evidence of her actually carrying out this “challenge” anywhere on social media.
My first issue lies with the fact that she is shopping at Walmart with a designer bag. I know that’s really random and might make it seem like I think Walmart isn’t a place for designer items or like is low end, but that’s not something I’m trying to imply. Walmart is more geared toward savings and getting a good deal, and being able to shop for less, and so the fact that she had this flashy designer bag while skipping into Walmart bothered me.
Once she starts picking out clothes, I found myself wanting to stop watching the video. Just from what I saw, Gigi wasn’t really picking out clothes that fit her usual style or that she would regularly wear. It felt like she was picking some items as a joke. This gave me the impression that she thought money was no object and she that could spend money on whatever she wanted whether it worked or not. She acted as if the idea of getting these outfits at Walmart was funny because she’d probably never wear any of it.
Next, what really made me want to stop watching the video was when she just picked up a bottle, a TWO LITER bottle, of Mountain Dew and just started drinking it. I know that sometimes when you’re in a store you might open a bottle of water or tea and start drinking before you pay for it, but honestly, Gigi just looked trashy and like she was using bad manners drinking from the giant bottle she picked up as she strolled by.
I know in the video Gigi says she’s never been to Walmart, but at the point in the video where she asks if they sell gowns there, I’m assuming that she’s been in Walmart long enough to see the clothing selection they have to realize they probably don’t selling dresses like that. Also, once she finds a “gown,” it is just a sweater with sparkles that she turns into a joke because I really doubt she’s going to wear it on the red carpet any time soon.
Furthermore, when she was looking for business clothes, Gigi got a plus sized pair of pants, tried them on, saw that they were too big and didn’t look business-like at all on her, and still bought them…
When she goes to try on clothes and waits for the employees to open up the door she acted a little over excited and her jumpy “fun” attitude felt disingenuous.
Finally, at the end of the video she asked if she could have the Mountain Dew that she drank…for free. I know she said this as a joke and probably paid for it. I’m added it because I didn’t interpret this as a joke until I watched it over a second time.
I know this was more of a critical rant, but I would like to clarify that I do love most of Gigi’s videos. She does make some mistakes here and there and the only reason I watched this video, because I really didn’t want to, was just so I could comment on the type of person this video makes her out to be. Gigi has seemed to change since becoming more popular. This video demonstrates that because she seemed like she just wanted to go out and spend money and be ridiculous. I feel like, if someone who didn’t know who she is or what her personality is saw this, they might assume she’s making a joke of Walmart and the people who shop there.
