To Taylor Swift’s haters:
I’m so excited for Reputation, and you want to run for the hills with covered ears at a simple mention of the title. Everyone’s entitled to their own opinion, and you must have your reasons for disliking Taylor and/or her music.
If it’s because of her songs, I’d like to know why. Taylor writes relatable, clever, and intelligent lyrics that will endure the test of time. I know that some of her songs only have a few chords, but I bet most of the songs you listen to follow the same sorts of progressions. Even as a dedicated Swiftie, I will admit that I think there are some songs that aren’t masterworks of songwriting, such as “We are Never Ever Getting Back Together.” But hey, it’s cute, right? Only Taylor could make a not-so-well-written song sound so catchy.
If it’s because of her personality or behavior, I’m sure you don’t know about how charitable she is and how kind and caring she is to her friends, family, and fans. She bakes and throws parties for her friends; she reaches out to and personally connects with her fans. She even wrote a song, “Long Live,” and dedicated it to her steadfast admirers. She values time with her parents and brothers and is still friends with her high school bestie. She even donated to hurricane and flood victims, and to charities to stop sexual assault. She has also visited hospitals to see some of her fans.
Taylor has endured immense criticism with incredible grace and class. From the 2009 VMA incident to a critic saying that she couldn’t sing, she rises above meanness and turns her negative experiences into art. She is not a victim, she is resilient.
You may hate her because you think she dates too much but let me remind you that she has free will just like everyone else and if she wants to date a lot, so be it. Also, let me remind you that she has been single for a while in the past as well.
As a hater, you may be wondering why I like her so much. I started listening to Taylor’s music when I was in fourth grade, so it’s safe to say that I’ve quite nearly grown up listening to her. I felt a giddy excitement listening to her love songs and heartbroken listening to her breakup songs before I even knew what they meant or what that was like. When I got to middle and high school and developed real crushes (and later went on my first date), I felt like her songs described my life. As I, myself, sing and write songs, she was a huge inspiration for me both musically and with her kind personality, her passion, and her gracefulness in handling difficult public situations. Taylor is not only one of my favorite singers, but she is also a role model.
Again, everyone has the right to their own opinion, but I hope this article helped you see the other side.
