We have been spoiled by CGI when it comes to scary movies. Special effects have transformed horror movies over the last few decades; the gore is gorier, the slashers scarier, and the horror is more horrible. But there is something to be said for the campy classics that we left behind. No, the budgets werenât that big, and yes, that blood is probably ketchup, but itâs nothing if not entertaining to explore the roots of this creepy genre and see just how far weâve come.
âThe Hills Have Eyesâ(1977) is one of my personal favorites when it comes to hilariously outdated gore-fests. If youâre a fan of the 2006 remake, you might like to see where it all started. The 70âs hairstyles, the adorable overacting, and the classic horror cliches make this a great choice if youâre looking for a giggle.
One of the probably better known classics is âHalloweenâ(1978). This film was way ahead of its time and definitely set up the success of many future slasher films, not to mention its own sequels. A must-see if youâre having trouble getting in the spirit of the season.
If these arenât weird enough for you, you might get a kick out of âThe Wicker Manâ(1973). This odd mystery movie inspired an equally strange remake in 2006 starring Nicholas Cage, but the quirky classic is a little more silly than scary. If youâre in the mood for a movie that will leave you asking âwhat the hell?â, then try on this creepy cult thriller.
These are just a few of my favorite horror flashbacks that are fun to dust off whenever Halloween rolls around. If youâre a film fiend, a horror junkie, or you just like that old-movie charm, do yourself a favor and donât discount the classics.
