This week Demi Lovato released her very real YouTube documentary, “Simply Complicated” and it deserves to be talked about. Demi has been one of my favorite women in the music industry since she starred in “Camp Rock” and her documentary made me love her even more.
One of the best parts about this entire documentary is that Demi continues to be the boss woman she has been for so long, but in the best way possible. Everyone knows that Demi has been through some turmoil in the past ten years, but this documentary really takes you through everything that happened along with the crazy emotions felt.
The entire time I was watching the documentary, I kept thinking how crazy it was that she had been through as much as she has and she’s only 25. Demi was very open to the fact that she tried cocaine for the first time at age 17 and where she stood with biological father.
The documentary showed raw images from her lowest points paired with commentary from Demi and her closest friends. For me, being a Demi fan for awhile, I knew she had been through plenty over the years, but it didn’t register when it was happening. So, for her to put all of that into her documentary and really dig into all of it, was empowering to me.
Demi not only talked about her struggle with addiction and bipolar disorder, she also discussed her issues with dealing with heartbreak. The thing about Demi is that she has always been very real, but in the moment that she discussed her breakup with Wilmer, she became completely human to me. I’ve always looked at her as being someone larger than life and extremely powerful, and during that scene she showed real vulnerability that was extremely admirable and, in fact, made her even more of a powerful woman.
It’s amazing to see someone as influential as Demi address issues she has had in the past and show how she got better. The road to recovery is different for everyone, which Demi addresses, but it is still great to see someone with such a platform put this message out into the popular media.
This documentary also focuses on the power creating music has for Demi as an individual and how it has helped her over the last decade. She shares that she has been struggling with depression since she was fairly young, saying that she used to be fascinated with the idea of death and that music was her outlet for all of the negative feelings she felt for so long. I loved this part of the documentary because I think that music is one of the most powerful things we have in the world – and not to mention that all of the scenes with her singing gave me constant chills, but that was just a bonus because she has such raw talent.
Whether you have loved Demi since her early days on Disney, are a new fan or don’t necessarily listen to her music, you need to check this documentary out. It made me feel so many feelings and has such an important message to it, especially for people struggling with their own demons. Good news is, she partnered with YouTube, so anyone can watch it.
