After losing to Nebraska earlier in the season, the Wisconsin volleyball team defeated them on home turf at the UW Field House on Wednesday, Oct. 11. As the fourth quarter got more intense, cheers from the fans continued to push the Badgers through to secure a win against Nebraska. This is the team’s first win over Nebraska since the 2014 season.
The Wisconsin volleyball team has had a wonderful season so far, with 13 wins and 4 losses. Before the Nebraska win, the Badgers had lost three straight matches to Big Ten contenders — this is the first time something like that has happened since the 2015 season. They now have a winning streak after their wins over Nebraska and Indiana. Currently, the Badgers are ranked 11th in the NCAA.
Although the Badgers lost four-time All-American setter Lauren Carlini and middle blocker Haleigh Nelson this year, the team is still making records with the new freshmen on the team. Freshman and middle blocker Dana Rettke has been having an amazing season — she has been recognized as Big Ten Conference Freshman of the Week four times. Freshman and setter Sydney Hilley also earned her fourth straight double-double in the Nebraska game. She, too, has been recognized as Big Ten Freshman of the Week, on top of Big Ten Setter of the Week. Both Dana Rettke and Sydney Hilley are ranked among the bests of the Big Ten conference.
The Wisconsin Badgers have been tearing up the court — they have been breaking and making records. If you haven’t been to a Wisconsin volleyball game yet, you’re missing out on the excitement! The best thing about watching our volleyball team is seeing how the girls put their hearts into the games — the spikes, the blocks, team hugs and overall performance say it all. I can’t wait to see what they have in store for the Big Ten Championship and, hopefully, NCAA tournament.
