3 Spooky Makeup Ideas for Halloween

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wake Forest chapter.

We’re already into the second week of October: the month that signifies scary movies, pumpkins and costumes. If you are anything like me, you’re probably looking for a costume that’s different than what you’ve done before. For the past few weeks, I’ve been falling in love with the idea of make up as a costume. It seems in some ways easier than finding the “perfect costume” and infinitely more fun. Here are three really cool, seemingly easy Halloween makeup looks to try:

1. The Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland.

You don’t need much for this look– along with black mascara and black eyeliner and your regular brow routine and foundation– you need white eyeliner, pink eyeliner and/or eyeshadow and purple eyeliner and/or eyeshadow. Do your normal base layer routine, then outline your nose and lips with the purple/pink combo. Notice how overdrawn her “mouth” is.  For the eyes, use the pink eyeshadow as a base then layer the purple over top in a sort of reverse smokey eye. Give yourself a sexy cat eye, and top it off with some fake lashes if you’re comfortable. Then use alternating pink and purple contour/highlight to create the sense of the cheshire cat’s unique coloring. Finish the look with some blending and a solid finishing spray.

2. Suzy Scarecrow

If you’re looking for maximum impact with minimal effort this is the make up costume for you. The only things you need that are possibly outside the realm of your cosmetics bag are orange creme blush or creme lipstick, and black lipstick. To recreate this look, I’d start with your base layer (foundation, brows) then put your orange product of choice on your eyelids, nose, and the apples of your cheeks. Blend your eyelids and cheeks slightly. For the eyes, line the eyes with black eyeliner, overlining and underlining both sets of lashes. Follow this up with a dramatic mascara and falsies if you so choose. Then apply the black lipstick and use black eyeliner to draw a line on either side of your mouth, and lastly make the “stitches” to finish off the look. Always use setting spray to maximize the longevity of your products and overall look.

3. Skully

This look is probably the most dramatic, but also the most cost efficient considering you’d already have everything you need to complete it.  To start, put foundation on your entire face including eyelids and lips. Do your brows according to your normal routine. Use black eyeshadow to blackout your eyelid, and rim your lower lids with black shadow. Line your eyes with black eyeliner–make sure to tightline–and then use a dark brown to create a smokey effect on your browbone and under your lower lashline. Use contour to contour the sides of your nose and the ridge that connects your nose to your brow bone. Next, use black eyeshadow on your nose, create a triangle-ish shape to mimic a skull. Then use contour and highlight  to really make your cheekbones pop! See picture for best example. Lastly draw two horizontal lines from either corner of your mouth and then draw vertical lines bisecting it to complete the skull appearance.

I hope you found these makeup looks intriguing, and I can’t wait to see what you all come up with for Halloween!

HCXO,

Mia
