Where my family is from, sororities do not exist, they don’t understand the sisterhood bond nor do they get why you have to physically run to a group of girls and admire them even though you just met them a few days ago. When my family envisions a sorority environment it is a Sydney White setting with a side of Elle Woods getting her LSAT test scores.
1. Que es Mommy Daughter day?
Meanwhile everyone is excited for the brunch my sorority is having for mommy and daughter day, I already knew asking my mom to come was already out of the question. The weekend after the event was announced my Mom came to visit me. Me being me I casually mentioned it in the conversation just to confirm her reaction. As I expected she was confused on why we couldn’t just go have brunch together the next day. “What do you mean? We are having a mommy and daughter day now??” I tried again for family weekend but my mom just wanted my sorority to make another family weekend for Latin American families with salsa music and rice and beans to eat. No mamasita it definitely doesn’t work like that.
2. Oh, so you’re in alpha?
Like any other Grandmother mine calls at the most inconvenient times. No matter where I am I must answer. I could be in the shower, in class or out at Happy Hour but if I don’t answer there’s some family drama coming. Yeah, she’s interested in my life and wants to know about all the details but does she understand it? No. After recruitment, I tried explaining to her what my sorority was called and in the end, she only ended up being able to say one syllable, beta and it wasn’t even right. Similarly, her continuously calling it a fraternity to her other grandma friends whenever she tries to explain the organization I’m in, it’s just not a thing in South America.
3. Big and Little reveal
Ah a full week of being spoiled with my favorite things, boys delivering gifts to me and yes, I received puppies for a hot minute along with a basket full of my favorite candy. Yes, she jumps out of a cardboard box and yes, we take endless photos pretending to laugh. I may not know anything about her but she may love me as much you love me mom. That’s what I said when I tried to explain the reveal to my family but the only response I received was a puzzled look through FaceTime from my older sister saying she was my big sister and would be the only one. Yeah, she was definitely low key jealous.
4. Why are you coming home so late and always tired!!
As I answer my Father’s FaceTime call at lip sync practice he is literally concerned as to why I am not studying on a Tuesday night. He asks to see the books even though he knows I’m literally at my sorority house. “Dancing here, dancing there show me the books!!” sorry Dad but lip sync practice till I die, the formations are off centered so we basically have to go over everything all over again. Should I be prioritizing a dance over my studies? Probably not but all they need to know is I’m going to be a star when I perform. I explain to my Mom that because of the hurricane we only had two weeks to put together a dance that they usually had a month to prepare for last year. Yes Mom, every night, yes Mom I have bruises on my knees but I swear they are from the floor work and that’s all.
