Some people look forward to fall for the changing leaves, the need to break out comfy sweaters and the cravings for pumpkin flavored everything. But, if you are like me, the real anticipation comes from waiting for the new fall shows, potential obsessions, to premiere. With popular shows like This is Us and Supergirl returning, these are the best programs to check out that could possibly add to this thriving television era.
The Mayor
This comedy could possibly launch the career of Brandon Micheal Hall who plays an aspiring rapper elected the mayor of a small town. His mother is played by the hilarious Yvette Nicole Brown, who many remember for making Drake and Josh so enjoyable. Rounding out this talented cast is Lea Michele, marking her first good role since Glee ended (Let’s not mention Scream Queens its subpar plot.) Hopefully these three can be next comedic force to take over television.
The Good Doctor
Despite creepily and perfectly portraying the twisted Norman Bates in Bates Motel, Freddie Highmore’s previous show wasn’t watched or appreciated by as many viewers as it should have been. Luckily, the versatile actor quickly landed a new show called The Good Doctor which is a Grey’s Anatomy-esque medical drama highlighting the limitless capabilities people diagnosed with autism possess. The show will surely cause viewers to tear up but hopefully generate discussions and great understanding of the disorder.
Young Sheldon
Another comedy, but with a completely different type of humor. Young Sheldon is a spinoff of The Big Bang Theory which enters its 11th season this fall. Spoiler alert: the show already drew a huge audience the night it premiered and has been given a full season. The show chronicles Sheldon Cooper’s upbringing with voiceovers from Jim Parsons similar to the style of Fresh Off the Boat or Everybody Hates Chris. Let’s see if this show will have longevity like its predecessor.
TRL
Okay, technically this isn’t a new show. But the return of TRL will not feature Carson Daly and instead three new faces will take his place. This reinvented TRL reflects MTV’s commitment to focusing more on music. (So, now we kind of forgive them for cancelling Sweet Vicious.) There currently is not a popular platform on television to support upcoming artists so fingers crossed TRL can fill this void.
The Deuce
The description of The Deuce is tempting enough. It was created by the masterminds behind The Wire, James Franco is an executive producer and it takes place in the ‘70s while focusing on the sex-trade industry in New York City. Plus, Maggie Gyllenhaal stars in the series marking her biggest role in years. The unexplored subject matter coupled with the edgy and elaborate production HBO series tend to have means this show is bound to have intriguing content.
Dynasty
Yes, another reboot. But this time it is arguably much different than the original plot. Out of all the shows on this list, Dynasty has people the most divided. Even one of the lead actors from the ‘80s show recently said he doesn’t think the reboot looks great at all. The soap opera stars Elizabeth Gillies as an heiress who must deal with her billionaire father marrying a new woman. Of course there will be plenty of scandalous subplots typically found on The CW show but maybe this show will gain a new following like the 90210 reboot.
