I’m the type of girl who will shamelessly admit that I spare no expense when it comes to beauty. I’ll dye my hair until I get the shade that’s just right, spend loads on some Fenty beauty (can we talk about those highlights?!) and have my nails just right for that special event. After all, when you look good, you feel good! So it’s no surprise I was tempted to try the hot new trend of eyelash extensions. If you don’t know, eyelash extensions are basically individual fake lashes glued on to the base of your natural ones for a fuller, voluminous look without lumps of mascara.
But like most things in life, there’s the good, the bad, and the ugly.
The Good:
It’s pain free. The application process is long (typically an hour to two hours for full sets, half an hour to an hour for refills,) but not painful whatsoever. I’m pretty sure I’ve taken some of my most relaxing naps at my eyelash appointments!
You’ll feel like the most glamorous girl in the room, minus the effort. Wake up and have beautiful, long lashes. Go to school, with beautiful, long lashes. Head to bed, and still have beautiful long lashes. Do you see where I’m going with this?
They may be fake, but look as natural as can be. With custom sizes, you can choose the length and volume you desire, or the technician can recommend what will work for your eye type. It’s a noticeable difference, but in this most naturally charming way.
The Bad:
They start falling off. And when they do, you’ll need some major willpower to not pick and pull the lone survivors and end up damaging your natural lashes.
They’re high maintenance af. The first few days with new lashes, I treat them as if they were my unborn child, making sure they’re perfectly brushed at all times and far away from any contact with water. As time goes on, that great sense of responsibility quickly fades and I’m forgetting all the rules. Too lazy to brush them out and too careless to think twice about applying loads of mascara on top!
And the Just Plain Ugly:
They come with an expensive price tag. A well done eyelash set can range anywhere from $100-$250. (And I thought a $50 mani-pedi was expensive!) Especially for a college student surviving on ramen noodles and a $20 account balance, it’s definitely not the most economically wise choice.
They can damage your real lashes. You can avoid this with proper care, but regardless due to the fact that something artificial is being glued and weighing down your lashes, they will appear shorter and weaker after removal.
All in all, although I miss waking up with elegant lashes and feeling as fancy as ever, I think the cons outweighs the pros. Maybe when I’m a little more responsible and a lot more rich, I’ll be able to keep up with eyelash extensions. Until then, I’ll settle for my favorite mascara and good ol’ curler!
